Have they fixed the black terrain problem yet?

Have they fixed the problem of having all black terrain on the screen. I remember trying out the demo version and I couldn't see anything but black terrain, on the screen. Wondering if they have made a patch for us lower graphics users.

One of the patches did fix the problem for some machines but not all. Basically, your graphic driver/card needs to support hardware TnL. Intel chipsets do not support this so they quite commonly display a black terrain.

So does this mean that those of us with Intel chipsets are just screwed? Should we plan to stick with Civ III forever?

Since those Intel chipsets don't support TnL then the short answer is yes. It is a required min spec for the video hardware to support TnL as it says on the website. Just another victim of switching to 3D sadly. I don't know of any workarounds either, sorry.

I more or less expected that and I suppose I will have to buy myself a compatible video card. I hate shopping too.

Some Intel chipsets will support TnL. My old computer only had an Intel chipset, and on 1.0 it did have black terrain problems, but when patched to 1.09 it would display the terrain properly, although the game ran rather slowly. It mine be worth trying, depending on your specific chipset, but you would be a lot better off with a proper graphics card.
