have you built the Iron Works SW?

I was lucky to have the chance to build one in one of my first games ever, and there were probably another few times since then, but all in all it's very rare to be able to build this SW, and it's supposed to be that way.

If it's gonna take so long to build it (Implying the city has a low shield production to begin with) that you'd rush it then surely it's not worth the bother of using a leader in the first place..?

I built Iron Works in my first Civ3 game, back then I didn't even know what the requirements were; it just showed up in the list and I decided to start production.

Since then I've never gotten another opportunity.

:lol::goodjob:

But yes, some factors like city spacing would influence chances to get possible IW sites on a map. Playing with max opponents counts in as well (# of resources depends on # of civs).
So play on a huge map vs 4 rivals or so and IW becomes a myth.

First of all iron works is not a gimi, it increases the cities output by 100% so it shouldn't be easy to build. Ive built it once out of the few games where ive actually stayed motavated to finish the game. It wasnt in the territory of one of my built cities but one of my captured cities, and on top of that i could have built it again bu this one was about 20 cities away. After i built the ironworks there, i built the Forbidden Palace and it became muy muy strong. To bad you cant build it more than once.

yeah thats how i was as a starter.

I've built it many many times, to many to count, but it just might be because of goodluck ;).

I think I had it once when I was playing on Chieftain. Never had it while playing on Regent/Monarch.

Iron Works... 100% I always have it built. Never do I neglect the ability to add to my production.

Every game, every time. 100%.

In the year or so (10+ games?) , that I have been playing this game; I have built the Iron Works exactly one time.

In my current game (C3C), I accidentally built the city of Sardica (Byzantines) so that it had both coal and iron in it's radius. :D It was close enough to the capitol that I built the iron works in 18 turns. :hammer: I find it interesting that in this game the Mongols also had a city with coal and iron. I took it away from them. Now if I can just hold on to it.

In one other (PTW) game, I had a city with coal just outside the city radius. Missed by one tile.

Actually... I just built it for the first time in a LONG time last night. I really lucked out. I had captured a nice city from teh egyptians that was on my far Eastern border and I was planning on building that city up as my new boundry city. I rushed production of a temple and a courthouse then started the FP. 22 turns later it was my top producer. About 20 turns later after it was stacked with pretty much everything I could build I picked up steam power. There it was, a nice fat lump of coal sitting right next to my iron. That city is a beast right now pumping out a cav every turn. (no rubber, the damn Indians have all 4 sources!)

Anyhow, it has been a major boon. =-)

I always build it if I can. In the roughly 2 yrs I've been playing Civ3, that's happened only twice that I remember.

I can always find the possibility *somewhere* on the map when I play huge pangea with all 16 civs. And if I can, I will build it, of course.

In my current game, I am the largest civ, but I dont have that much land area. Not only can I build 1 Iron Works, but 4 different cities in different areas of my small empire can!

I'm playing my third game ever and I'm building the Iron Works right now. I saw this thread yesterday, and today as I was playing I saw a Russian city with both iron and coal in its radius, and I had been planning to oust them from the continent for a while, so I was able to start it shortly after my invasion began.

I lucked out and got it in my fourth C3C game. I moved my palace near it for max production.

Any have a good producing city (80+ shields), then build a nukle plant, and then iron works? That would be the best city.

Yeah one of the times that i built it the city also was able to build a factory then a coal plant, but it produced alot of pollution, so workers were practically sationed there. The few times that i did build the iron works, i built it in the vastness of a jungle, so i had to clear all of the jungles then build it. Another time i built it was in a near by jungle in a coastle city, after that, i was building a battleship once every 2 turns!!!
