Headphones and a Mic

Is that definately all you can spend?

I used my Sennheiser 280's for music (they cost around £115, probably cheaper over there ($100 in US), and I got them for £60 off of eBay). But then I heard you can get a mic installed in the left ear piece... so I got a second pair with it installed (took it in to the shop, I can do amps, but not headphones) ands its been amazing so far :).

The only thing is the money, and if you have Senheisser over there? If not, there are plenty of headsets i'm sure people here will know about.

Definitely a SONY headphones. ($50au)
and probably a seperate stand alone mic.

Plantronics!

I was into my online gaming hardcore for about a year, got my 'Plantronics Gamecom 1' headset a few months into it and never looked back! They cost me £25, which is a little under $60 au. The only downside to them is maybe they aren't as stylish as other headsets (judge for yourself), but as for comfort, sound quality, clarity, practicality, everything (!) they absolutely rock.
After being in the pro gaming scene (;)) for a while, i've spoken to many who swear by them.

And btw, my brother has a pair of Sennheisers, they cost 4x as much, I don't notice the difference in sound quality. The Sennheisers do go louder, however it really shouldn't matter unless you're planning on using them as speakers also.

I use a Plantronics DSP-500 headset. Great sound quality and an excellent mic. Of course there are higher end "surround sound" headsets that will run through your sound card so that you can use EAX and stuff like that (the DSP series have their own digital sound processor and show up basically as its own sound card), but they fine with me for the the things I use 'em for - mainly flight sims.

and probably a seperate stand alone mic.

Desktop mics are notorious horrible. If you plan to use a mic for anything at all, you want a headset.
