When your mortgage is paid off someday, you will look back and say, "hey, that was one of the smartest things I ever did."

The game proceeds. Besides preparing to take on the Thrakos, Naxos looks ripe for the picking.

i dont have a lot of time these days (my PhD applications are due December 1st) , but i downloaded the new version just to check it out. it looks fantastic! i played about 10 turns and didnt have to deal with any ctd's or anything (also a good sign). The turns seemed faster already! one advantage of this palace-as-airport approach is that it allows for earlier trade, which im excited to experience once i have a bit more time.

one thing i did see in the editor that i thought i'd point out: Philip's War Academy is set to auto-produce Tribute rather than Phalanxes. I dont think this is intentional...

a few more things: have the herald upgrade to the messenger. it's just a nicer that way haha.

do you want to differentiate between the various science-person wonders at all? they currently all have the same flags, which is fine. But if you were into changing them slightly, i think we could come up with ways.

Herodotus unit: cool! i cant wait to defeat the father of history (and the father of lies!) in battle!

"Enemy" unit is for sacrifice right? you need to assign it a shield (production cost) value to make that work. otherwise it will sacrifice for 0 culture.

this is pretty minor, but would you be interested in having the generic hero upgrade into the unique heroes? it would be very simple to allow this without letting say, Lokris get a Spartan Hero. it wouldnt make much difference, but getting auto-produced heroes (as one of the big guys) that arent as good as the ones you can build seems backwards...

anyway, when i have more time in about a week ill be able to really give this a go!

good job so far though!

Vuldacon - Top man! Thank you kindly for the offer. The icons didn't work out for me. I tried a few times and I'm obviously ballsing it up somewhere. It's something that needs to be done to get to fully polished status for sure. If you're up for it then I would be most grateful indeed. Definitely lacking a graphics partner on this project.

Rambuchan...
Do you have a complete file you could upload or send to me?
You can PM me if you prefer.

Download link seems to be not active for me I don't know why :)

Whichever link I chose from Atomic Gamer after waiting time 2 or 3 minutes I can see "download now" but whenever I click on it is not working, not downloading.

Maybe someone had the same problem.

I'm afraid I'm all tied up with my family today. So cannot attend properly till later tonight or, more likely, tomorrow.

Help for stico - I clicked the DL link and it takes me just fine to Atomic Gamer. I can see others have managed to DL ok. I don't know what might be behind stico's problem. Any ideas people?

Keroro - Just so you know, I've managed to find time to send some original artwork (the episema used for resources and some buildings icons) to Vuldacon. There are of course others that need fixing. Maybe we can share the task out and let each other know so the load is lighter and there's no doubling up.

Thanks for all the input and feedback and help guys. I'll get back to these tomorrow.

Hope you're having fun!!

It's working now, must have been something wrong with Atomic. Let's see what you have done :) Period in your mod match exactly my interests.

By the way, I was wondering if my trojan style doesn't look to flat in game?

Glorious news from Aetolia, good Herodobuchan! The polis of Korinth reports great success in expanding its interests in the region. In the face of barbarian incursions the great citizens have instituted swift moving militia groups chosen from the cream of the gymnasia.

Our philosophical and scientific expertise benefits us with superior cities and weapons, as well as provided knowledge to trade to our rivals. Our wine production and worship at temples to the Olympian Gods provide the state with valuable gold and tributes. Other poleis are jealous and seek to steal our knowledge and land but we shall turn them back, just as we turned the Athenians back in the recent war and destroyed the city they has presumed to plant on the Isthmus just north of Korinth.

The Spartans to the south still harass us with their strong swordsmen, but our javelin armed militias and strong walls keep them at bay - sending them packing before they can even reach our walls. If they do fight their way through to the walls then our heavily armed professional soldiers shall sell their lives dearly to protect their homes.

________________

I was thinking of tacking the Great temple pictures first, so that shouldn't clash with what Vuldacon's doing.

Cool updates Rambuchan. :) Screenie attached of the area around my current Korinthian Tyrannic Kingdom.

EDIT - I did have some trouble downloading, not sure why. I had to refresh the Atomic Gamer window several times before the download link started appearing normally. I'd assume that it's an Atomic Gamer issue rather than anything Rambuchan can do anything about.

Keroro...
These need to be corrected:
Splashes, Advisors, Cities, Tech Icons
Civilopedia Images:
Buildings, Races, Resources

The resources.pcx is ok but could be remade to have more colors in the palette to show the images better.

I have completed the Advisors and City corrections...just s few there.

Working on Resources but need to communicate with Rambuchan.
I have made the new Wonder Splashes and correcting all others now.

Edit... The Resolutions also need correcting besides the palettes.

Hi! I downloaded the scenario, and it is absolutely amazing. I started a game with Krete, things are going quite well. I'm not saying that I could keep up with the big ones, I'm lagging with technologies pretty behind, but anyway, I managed to repel a few Spartan invasion attempts with great efforts and that makes me half-satisfied. :)

However I was a little bit disappointed, when it turned out the Kretens cannot build either Galley nor Minoan Galley, so I am the only civilization without any early means of seafaring. Is this intentional? Shouldn't Krete have the Minoan Galley?

Virote - Glad the pedia entries are going down well with you. Thanks for giving me the chance to buy you drinks on 28th December. Sadly, I'll be out of the country then, so will miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity.

7ronin - Nice screenie from your Ionia game. Very impressive achievement! You seem to be Lord of all Asia Minor. With the Domination Victory settings in v1.3 you could ride that home for Victory. But good luck with your invasion of Europe!

Just looking at the western side of that screenie:

It looks like Macedonia got done by someone. Can't make out who. Are others finding that Macedonia get crushed?

That hasn't happened in my test games and I've managed to turn superpower when I've played them. It's a real challenge in the first half of the game, what with all those tribal types around, but their power is insane in the second half.

Coltrane - All the best with those applications. Academia is in a pretty bad way over here, both funding and employment-wise.

~ Turn times & Trade: Yes, the whole thing is much much faster now. Don't know what you mean by ctds though. What are those? I agree, trade is much more interesting now.

~ Philip's War Academy - Well spotted. That isn't the way it should be. Though I don't think it would ruin anyone's game. I made a schoolboy error in deleting a unit, which caused certain unit settings like that to slide a slot. I thought I'd fixed them all, but that obviously slipped through. It's corrected already over here - but go ahead and set the AP unit to Phalanx for your games before I send out the fix.

~ Heralds & Messengers: - Funny, I presumed scouts upgraded to explorers already in the standard game (shows how little I play it, if at all). But I see they aren't set to upgrade in the biq. I've fixed that too. Thanks.

~ Academies of Plato & Aristotle: - They are meant to have the same benefits. Basically, a player is presented with the opportunity to build these upon researching Education. They are then faced with the classic "hmmm, who is my preferred philosopher? Plato or Aristotle?" I'm open to hearing ways of differentiating them though.

~ Herodotus Unit: - :D I have other touches like this up my sleeve for future versions. Idea is to bring in those story diversions Herodotus so loved. These are tied to little mini-games for the more backward civs.

~ Enemy Sacrifice: - Thanks for the info. I didn't know that. Have now given the enemy shield cost of 10. There's something else that needs fixing here: Both the Giapid Blood Drinker and Scordiscian Flesh Eater units of Illyria are supposed to enslave to the Enemy. For some reason the biq refuses to let me change the unit resulting from their enslave. I change it to Enemy for both those units and, when I go back to those units, it's back to doulos. Don't know why...

~ Heroes - No, the generic Hero is for some civs and the unique heroes are for others. They are parallel units for civs and shouldn't upgrade into one another.

stico - Glad you got it DLed! Hope you're having fun? Vuldacon has made me aware of how incapable I am with graphics. I may well have changed the palette when adding your cities in, without realising it. Sorry!! This is being fixed, don't worry. I think they look good by the way. They have a 'sprawling' feel to them, which I like. The bigger city sizes look taller of course.

Keroro - Thanks for the report. You know how these warm a scenario maker's heart :)

Interesting selection going with Corinth. Personally, I think they make for a great game to play. Right in the heart of things, stuck between the big boys and a key ally for any civ really. They are tough to play but provide a very good challenge and their scientific and productive qualities come out nicely further into the game.

Thanks for the screenie too. Always helpful. It's good to see Sparta now moving west into Messenian lands. Interesting that their second city Geronthrai was not built on the river itself. They always built in there in previous versions. I did however move some iron away from that city because it kept turning out to be a wonder factory with the productivity. I guess that might have made the difference, or maybe something else did.

From the screenie, it looks like the AI are behaving themselves as is designed. Don't take this the wrong way, but I'm glad to hear Athens went to war with you. I was hoping the tweaks I made to them would make them more interventionist.

I see you were 9 turns away from researching Episema when you took the screenie. The game changes dramatically after this tech!

schimtzi - Welcome to the thread. :goodjob:

Thank you for DLing, playing and posting back, especially with news about the Minoan Galley. That is a mistake and I'm very sorry. I really need guys to tell me when these things are spotted. It's now fixed in the biq here. FYI - Krete should have the Minoan Galley, but not the Galley. When I've gathered more feedback and findings like these from players I will release the fixed up biq.

I'm really glad you like it! Do please share any further thoughts, special things you like and any other anomalies you spot. Oh, and, well done on repelling those invasions!

Episema did look like a fairly crucial tech. I did a pretty quick beeline to it. I've not played civ 3 for a while so went on a pretty low difficulty for my first game - so I figured I could survive as Korinth OK. Plus they're scientific which is always the first trait I look for.

Vuldacon - I've corrected the tech icons with incorrect palettes and shall PM them to Rambuchan. Let me know how far you've got with the rest and I'll continue.

EDIT - Ah, I see you can't PM attachments. Nevermind. Attached here.

Thanks for the response, Rambuchan. It's no big deal, really. I just didn't know whether it had a reason or was just accidentally. Anyway I'm thinking about starting a new v1.3 game, because this one is still the v1.12. I'll just look into the Minoan Galley situation in the editor. Even so Krete is fun. A few Bardia combined with the swarm of Gymnitos that is autoproducing can overwhelm the superior units of Sparta (who btw. obviously has no intention to cut me some slack:p). Of course I suffer heavy casualties in each invasion wave, but still. It helps a lot that the Gymnitos has a movement rate of 2. The Spartan AI used against me an amphibious unit (don't know which one), but only once. Although it was very :nuke:, they never used it again. Odd, because that would be their only chance to do me harm. If they put the units ashore the regular way, in the same turn they find themselves in the Aegean sea again, they simply have no time to attack. I play on Monarch level, maybe the AI uses the amphibious assault more often on higher difficulty?

Keroro - Thanks a lot for the Tech chooser icon fixing. Very much appreciated. I've been sending Vuldacon all the original art files and liaising with him. To avoid any Chinese whispers, I think it's best if he keeps you updated with what he has or hasn't done. You guys are LEGENDS by the way.

Some tips on playing as Korinth:

There are plenty of sources of Tribute around you (both resources and punchbag civs) for cashing in and racking up those points. If you can dispatch one or two of those nearby big boys early (Sparta, Athens, Thebes) then you could be set up with enough land, resources for trading and strength to see down Macedonia and claim Hegemonic Victory. Your UU will help heaps in these later wars. If not, you've got a very good chance of at least obstructing others from Hegemonic Victory. Bear in mind that Athens have a serious leg up at the Tribute Victory with their Delian League improvements. Also, notice that the pedia entry for the Corinthians tribal resource says that there four of these on the map. The one you may not have spotted yet is placed to relate to Corinth's historical relationship with Corcyra, which Thucydides cites as one of the key factors in the outbreak of The Peloponnesian War.

schimtzi - What are you doing messing around with v1.12 still? Get with v1.3 man! Check out (in the OP) all the new features I added and which you're missing out on. If you thought the first version was 'absolutely amazing' then you're in for a treat with the latest. :groucho:

Yes, go ahead and do that Minoan Galley thing in the editor. While you're at it, note the other minor bugs King Coltrane kindly spotted, which I'll fix with a further update:

- The unit that's auto-produced from Phillip II's Wonder should be the Phalanx.
- Enemy unit should have shield cost of 10.
- Herald should upgrade to Messenger.

Some tips on playing as Krete:

You quite probably ain't ever going to win. But you possess some luxuries that the mainland Greeks will want. Cash in. There are also many key resources (for gaining tribute points and also for Hegemonic Victory) in the islands just north of you. Beat the Kyklades to these or take them off them. But you'll have to defend them well from the mainland Greeks. If you hit those islands early enough - and get the relevant improvements built - you could amass a good amount of Tribute Points. Maybe the others won't be able to catch you up...

played for a little while. noticed some things:

-pangaion mine does NOT currently have the "resource required within radius" flag checked, so it can be built anywhere and everywhere. HUGE exploit.

-due to resource placement, Athens can never build the samian shipyard, as there is no source of ionians within the radius of samians. (ok technically you'd have to build a city on the scroll resource north of Miletos, then build up the island next to it complete with trade port in order to possibly get this. so its possible, but annoyingly complicated... not worth it. maybe change one of the samians resources to ionians? problem would be solved

-the defensive value of the City Guard means that it cant be built in size 2 and 3 cities, which makes it hard to build the congress/league stuff. if this is intentional, thats fine, as it forces you to keep some production cities small, but if not, i just wanted to call it to your attention.

-similarly, athens (the city) cant build the Long Walls because its usually at size 2 by the time you would be able to build it. Again, if this is intentional (to symbolize a last ditch defense?) thats ok, but i wanted to call your attention to it

-Sparta's city graphics set, era 2, size 1, walled, seems to be messed up. its currently just a black rectangle.

-weird phenomenon: has Chalkidike completely failed to build ANY cultural improvements in anyone elses games? they easily have 25 cities, but only the capital has expanded cultural borders. no idea why. some cities are even size 2! any ideas?

-in this version the turn times are better, but i think you can still improve this. I think you can remove some "islanders" resources from the game and limit it to a select few (historically relevant) locations. These islands should be able to build some units (akontistes, archers, for example) but they should NOT be sources of huge military might. for that reason, i would say its ok to allow most islands to be effectively cut off from the main trade networks. of course, the cyclades and dodecanese could be the exceptions to this, possibly even giving them a unique trade port building that DOESNT require islanders, though that may be a bit much. the upshot is that fewer trading islands = shorter turn times.

-korkyra: how necessary are they? they have never expanded to more than one city in my games, and really dont add much. they frustratingly beat me to that granary in all cities wonder, which seems useless in their one city haha. granted, it does make them a prize to be captured, but i dont know if its worth having them there.

-Would it be possible to switch the Alexander and Philip wonders? it doesnt make sense for Alex to come first. I think Philip with his phalanxes should come first, then Alex and his cavalry should come second. What do you think?

-be careful with the various tribal camp buildings: if they dont produce culture, they can be captured by other civs. this might not be intended.

-btw, what i meant with the hero thing before is that if i build the temple wonder that produces heroes as athens or sparta i just get the generic hero, rather than the unique variants. Would you be willing to allow the regular hero to upgrade to the athenian and spartan hero? no other civs would be able to access these unique heroes (since the editor only allows the appropriately selected civs to build these units), but it would allow athens and sparta to have the appropriate units.

ok! i think thats it for now. ill keep looking around and report back!

one more thing!

-would you be willing to allow tribute and taxation and libations and all units like these to move on their own or at least load onto ships? it is annoying to have to have military escorts for all these units. granted, i understand it, but it would still be more fun if you didnt need to escort each piece.

7ronin [/BJust looking at the western side of that screenie:

The Macedonians are still around. It's just hard to distinguish them on the little world map. They have around ten or twelve cities. The other civs seem disinclined to war among themselves. My Naxos adventure has become a war of attrition. They had nothing else to do on their little islands except manufacture units. The AI seems to have no concept of how to employ naval units. The Thrakians have turned out to have a tissue paper defense. My invasion is going to stall somewhere along the line because of a lack of garrison units rather than because of anything the Thrakians are doing.

Hi Coltrane,

Thanks for spotting those things! Some of them easily fixed, others require a bit more feedback please.

Done and done:

~ Pangaion mine: Noted and fixed for upgrade.
~ Samian shipyard / Ionians: Noted and fixed for upgrade. I've moved one existing source of Ionians to Samos. Need to keep the number of Hegemonic resources at 3 a piece to allow AI trading of these.
~ Alexander & Phillip II Wonders: I've swapped the required techs around. Should have been like that in the first place!
~ Sparta City graphics: The graphics legends are making good for my shortcomings here.
~ Less Islanders / even faster turns: I did use these as sparingly as possible, bearing in mind crucial spots for resources. I can look again. Agreed that a whole new improvement would be overkill.
~ Tribal Camps remaining upon conquest: Thanks. Didn't know about that. Will give them all at least +1 culture so they don't remain on capture.

Feedback please:

~ Hero unit from Temple of Aphrodite: OK, I see what you mean now. I think it'd be best and easiest to just have a completely different unit from this. Suggestions?
~ City Guard: Damn, I always get caught out with the defence and city size issue. This is easily fixed by coming up with a new name and settings for this improvement. I was thinking of using something like Synedrion here to allow League Improvements anyway. Now I've got the excuse. Seems appropriate. But I was struggling to think of settings / benefits to give it that aren't already given from other improvements. And to make the AI build the damned thing.
~ Long Walls: Ditto with this. It's not designed to be a last ditch attempt. Suggestions on appropriate new settings to give it?

Also:

~ Corcyra / Kerkira: Go easy on them buddy. Just cos they beat you to the Temple of Demeter! In my games they've gotten up to stuff, like settling across the water in Epidamnus area, which is perfectly historical. I'm also planning on sorting them out with a new UU - the Corcyrean Trireme - and maybe the new Rebel unit too, which should make a difference.
~ Tribute moving itself: As far as I know, flag units need to be checked with the immobile flag to perform the function. So I'm not sure this is possible. I also think that gaining tribute shouldn't be that easy. It should be a maintenance issue and I have thrown a bone to the task with the Gymnitos unit.
