So, what would you have done? Playing on Emperor, I discover I'm on a small "U" shaped continent with Greece (on turn 2!) and Mongolia. Ugh.

I know war is coming, but I pop writing from a hut on turn 12. My thought was to get the GL, then outtech and crush them with superior units when the DOW comes. I got GL and started building infrastructure.

Thing is, Mongolia starts going after city states. Greece doesn't attack for a loooong time. When he does, he comes hard, with 7 archers, 3 pikes, 2 hoplites and 2 swords. It was incredible. I almost lost my capitol (0 hps but he had no melee units), but I pushed him back, took Sparta and Athens.

I then DoW'd Mongolia. I liberated Columbo, but puppeted Singapore because he built Statue of Zeus in it. Then I got stuck trying to take Beshbalk so I had to sue for peace. Shortly thereafter, he took Columbo again! Argh.

So now it's T231. Everyone else has been clicking along. I'm middle of the pack and need more soldiers if I'm gonna war again.

Was it a mistake to go GL and not just kill Greece immediately. What would you do?

I think GL is usually regarded as a bad move on higher difficulties, since it takes so long to build. Plus, the AI usually gets to it first.

As for Greece... you probably should have killed them.

I would have spit, and said frigg Alex again!! I would have rushed Horse Back Riding and used them to abuse the triple gold. I also would have cried as Mongolia knocked me out of the game.

Pay Mongolia to attack Greece's CS allies and bide your time to build up a potent military before scraping up the scraps.
