[HELP] Built a new comp. End turn still takes 1 min to finish.

I recently bought a new Sandy Bridge i5 laptop. CiV runs much better than my old laptop which was AMD based.

From what I understand Ivy Bridge will not be as large a step in performance as Sandy Bridge was. However another big jump will come around in 2013 (going with Intel's tick tock model).

This is a CPU heavy game, and it does show the tech lead Intel have created when compared to AMD. Not to write AMD off though. Those new AMD based laptops have good gaming performance for a modest cost. Most Intel based laptops are stuck with the HD 3000.

While AMD is lacking in the CPU department, all you have shown is that new hardware > old hardware.

yeah, based on benchmark testing, intels beat amd, but that's at a more than average computer users settings. just getting one without tweaking all the bells and whistles and not having other super components means very little to the person who bought one prefab.

assembled from scratch and tweaked to death is where people actually can tell why its better.

btw: amd user, built mine from scratch with parts i could afford and i dont OC or tweak to death. mines better than an i5 but not an i7. and if i used either i's, the performance difference wouldn't be stark for what i use computers for. top end gaming has never been my need for computers.

There isn't a comp on the planet that can handle this buggy mess at later rounds

Owch. Those are some painful turn times. I think it was probably too difficult for them to design an efficient algorithm to determine where to move units (not saying it is easy).

I've definintely noticed the time between turns getting very long sometimes too. For me it usually starts already during reneissance era (turns 200-300) and I think that it's one of the main reasons why playing CiV is quite boring when you're not at war. At war it can easily take me 5-10 mins to end my turn so waiting one minute in between isn't that hard. However, when you're at peace you start to notice the waiting more and more.

35 seconds is about right, but no minute. Don't the graphics card and gigs RAM effect turn times as well?

So if anyone playing with XP and AMD, do you see any grey tiles or polkadot tiles in the later game, on larger maps?

Sorry, if I have to repeat myself like a parrot but I haven't found the answer to this yet. I have a nice 4-quad with a descent graficscard too boot, but since XP only allows for 2 gb mem to be used, I simply guess that could be my problem.....especially as I haven't gotten one answer on this for a year?

Is it just obvious that I have to leave XP, and move on to another? XP plays every other game just fine, it is just CIV that seems to have a problem with me.

Probably a memory leak or driver bug...

After playing about 6-7 hours some of the textures start going black and I have to save and reload to get them to clear up.

Sure, everything adds up. I believe the reviewer was using 16GB of RAM and Xfire 6970s.

This is most likely a huge map with max civs, I don't think a small map would have this kind of a performance hit even at round 400

This is pretty much in line with my own performance by round 500 or so when multiple wars are going on I'm personally running with something like 80 units or so. I've got an i7-920 at 3.8GHz, 12GB of RAM, 6970s in crossfire and Intel SLC SSDs.

I found it to run a BIT faster in DX 9 mode. Still - I avoid huge maps. A pity!

DX9 for me too, but even standard maps sometimes get the grey tiles, so going larger is always a danger.

I did play one game over the weekend, archipelago though, but the grey tiles didn't turn up until around 1700+, so I don't get it where different maps cause this problem?

I'm using Win7 + GTX570.
I occasionally get graphical glitches, but nothing like you describe.
