Help! I am addicted to marathon/large.

Normal civ games are terrible man, I'm completely with you. I actually downloaded a mod that goes a step above marathon... historic mode, where it stays in each age even longer... I feel it gives the game a nicer scope of history

I think it depends heavily on how good your computer is. Most people saying tiny/small is the way to go are like me - our computers are a little old. Larger maps simply become unplayable. I would much rather play large maps - they're more immersive... but at this point it's not an option, and there's no way I'm upgrading my computer just for this game.

Break your addiction to Marathon/Large. Play on Marathon/Huge :)

Cheers.

+1

When I play MP with my friends, I want to play marathon games, but my friends doesn't want to...so we play on Epic. I also find that medieval is most fun because most countries have their special units built on this era. When you get to modern time, it gets boring because everyone is making that same unit and no unique units of their own.

+2 . . . Just finished a 1092 turn 63 hour science victory on Marathon/Huge/Earth/King map with 22 civs and 22 city-states. I can't imagine playing any other way.

I'm now playing another game only with all 28 city-states and I upped the difficulty to Emporer this time. Turn 74 and it's 2890 BC :-)

We need to legalise civ, get junkies out of the criminal system and into the public health system - provide liscensed legal gaming rooms where addicts can get their fix safely either for free or a nominal fee in a supervised environment (they would not be able to take civ out of the center) - this way we would completely eliminate all the health problems associated with civ, and take away it's attractiveness as a illegal game of abuse, for nerds. We also stop addicts playing violent games or games involving theft, to get the huge amount of money normally required to constantly be dosed up on civ 5.

Oh, wait, too far?

You'll get bored of it eventually and then decide to play standard/small maps. I spent the first 6 months of civ playing exclusively marathon, and then got bored of doing the same settings, so I switched over to standard/small (which I only did twice before) and now it's my standard method of play. Sometimes the big stuff is just simply too much. You wanna go back to the gateway stuff.

I play on large and standard, but I really don't like the speed of research. I've tried a few mods, but they never really did it for me. I like to be able to build up a defense, and enjoy the era I'm in at the time.

On standard , I can just start pumping out the defense, no worries it just not feel real to me. Please, Help....

You need no help! In fact we all love the long way . Huge, Marathon, and all Civs.
