The tutorial works, if I load a scenario it works, the opening movie works. But when I try to start a new game from scratch, I crash just as the map is starting to come up, then have to cold reboot. After choosing the world size and the leader type etc. when I hit the "start game" button, everything stops. What do I do? I have a laptop, 1.6 centrino, 512ram, ATI Radeon 9200. What a pain, I've never had a problem before with any other game.

Thanks,
Sethage

Hi Seth,

Your specs apear to be at minimum or above.

Try setting the graphics options to low with no AA.

Reduce anything that will put strain on your system.

Like use single unit graphics etc.

Then give it a try.

If that doesnt work, run dxdiag and post the info file here please.

Nope I have similar specs (except 1.7 Pentium M) and now it works just fine.

First, go in configuration panel > administration tools > event logs
If there's something about infinite loop or graphic card driver problem during the crash, then you have the problem I had.

Then try to install Catalyst 4.12 : see this thread first. Caution, you can't install it on laptops, you have to mod it here.

Follow the steps and read everything carefully...

I also strongly recommand you add 512MB or 1G extra ram ; even with 256 you can enjoy the difference : I can play all details & resolution on max except on huge maps and modern era where you have tu lower them to min...

Hope it helped.

Nino , do you have Radeon 9200. I am aking becuase I have the same card and the same problems like Sethage

Okay, so I got the mod, I had to download an ocx library file etc. When it got to the actual installation, it said I was missing an atioglx1.dll file. So how do I get one? I've looked and I can't find it anywhere online except for those fix-all download sites that I'm sure are not a good thing. To be honest, this game can't really be worth all this crap. I have never had this much trouble getting a game to work, ever. So can this atioglx1.dll file be downloaded? Thanx
Sethage

You're almost there! (Sorry i forgot to explain this detail)
At this point I made a copy of the file atioglxx.dll which you surely have (in Windows/system32), and renamed it into atioglx1.dll and then it finished the installation and all my problems were gone.
Trust me on this one!

P.S. Nonetheless I completely agree with you that the game isn't worth all this...
