I find if I stop a game I don't feel like picking it up again, I just want to start a new one, so I often try to play a game all at once, but I like epic speed and the games take me 4-8 hours. I also feel like I want to play one every day :( It's affecting my grades. Have any of you figured out how to deal with this?

I don't know if this is the right place to treat addiction, but...

Set a limit of one hour a day. The game isn't going anywhere, right?

If you look in the options there is even an alarm you can set to let you know when time is up. I know you've heard this before but take care of your work, get some sleep and play when you have spare time.

I think for the most part that we don't (we are the fanatics, remember?). :D

But if you really need help, contact these people. Here's their link:

Good luck.

Yes. You do your job/school, then you play civ. If necessary, do both school work and civ faster. 4 is on the upper end of my game times, even on epic, so 1 sitting is doable ;).

My grades aren't perfect but I put what I'm willing to put into them, unaffected by civ (prior to being here I found other ways to screw around...), but I'll take my 3.83 since I'm in grad school. I do miss the high school days of inflated well-over 4.0 GPAs though.

Don't neglect sleep IMO (it catches up, although easier if you're in your teens than twenties, twenties than 30's, and so on), and you can't neglect real-life obligations long. They catch up, and man does it hurt if they do. Just avoid that problem in the first place. Raising one's efficiency in school can be a big help.

For example, I used to take a couple hours to read 30 ish pages and write a few pages based on the reading, but now that's a weekly assignment that I do for about an hour at work the day of class. 5000 word papers are a weekend foray (although a bit annoying to do TBH, especially if you need 10+ sources).

In order to do that, you need to practice speed reading + comprehension, typing (which we do get some practice with here), and the ability to find useful information rapidly. If math is involved, work out whatever process in your head that is effective so you can repeat it faster without screwing up. Working on memorization can help a ton. Of course approaches vary by subject too.

Edit:
1. Stop game.
2. Go outside.
3. Find girlfriend.
4. ???
5. Profit - no just kidding...
5b. Initiate girlfriend to Civ IV.

If you can consistently find a way such that girlfriend = profit, go collect your Nobel prize. Unless you mean it's the girl that profits...but those aren't "girlfriends", strictly speaking!

lol TMIT you sound like one of those people who can't stand to get stuck behind someone walking slowly, or blocking the way on an escalator. Always going for efficiency/speed. I'm a bit like that too. :D

And noto2, if you have addictive tendencies to games, make sure you never sign up for something like WoW because MMORPGs can be even more addictive and time-wasters, and for the wrong reasons.

But then, most of us civfanatics are addicted to civ to some degree. I think many modders become addicted to modding once they start as well. :)

You have the right ideas, but I think you got the order wrong:

1. Go Outside
2. Find Girlfriend
3. Initiate girlfriend to Civ IV
4. Profit - no just kidding
5. Stop Game
5b. ???:crazyeye:

The only way I've ever been able to stop is to lose my CD, but then I just go buy another one anyway. But it helps for a while. ;)

I find the best way to cope with addiction to civ and homework is to:

1) first play civ (as long as you want, but be reasonable)

2) do your homework and studying, remind yourself that once your done with all your commitments and work that you will be able to binge on civ as long as you want

3) go back to the game your playing!

4)sleep (get at least 8 hours, trust me, an hour more of sleep can do wonders at school the next day ;) )

5) rinse and repeat the next day

1) get crate of beer from fridge

2) Start game

3) drink beer

Save and exit when you are too drunk to play sensibly anymore...

Works for me anyway ;)

This is a joke right?

You wouldn't think so if it happend to you!

:lol::lol::lol::lol:

Sorry I had to do that. I usually do not take this civ thingy so serious like...:crazyeye:
