I've been making some real progress into emporer, but this one is making me scratch my head. Gold, stone and food, but scattered in a pattern that's making me do a double take. Bonus: I get to race Zara for the land.

I thought I would turn to the group mind to get some help on this one.

Thoughts?

I would put the second city on the eastern flood plain. Farm the flood plain, boat the fish, and turn this into your GP farm. My next city I would put up is at one east of the wine and two south of the fish on the left side. Mine the hills and boat the fish. Turn this into your production center. Establish your fourth 2 east of the corn and 1 north of the mountain. cottage everything and fuel your economy. If you dont have any good islands hiding off your coast, put your last city on the forested hill so it shares the banana with your capital. This city is going to be all that great. The land is going to max you out at 5 until CS or Calendar.

Depends a bit on where copper pops up. But i think i would put my first settler to cut of Zara - if he is on the same landmass - can't see fpr sure from the screenshot.

Here is my proposed dotmap (this may change as copper/horses/iron appear):

The overlap between cities 2 and 3 is not a big deal (4 out of 6 tiles are either water, desert of peak). All of the cities are coastal as well so you should be aiming for the Great Lighthouse and Colossus. :)

I suggest screwing your plan of blocking Zara (no offense). The land north of him is crummy, and there's no way to build a city which grabs the Corn and Bananas. Also, use a Work Boat to explore the islands north of the Scout;

All other commentary is on the dot map. Hope it helps!:)

Thanks for your suggestions guys! There's no copper anywhere in that screen shot >< but there is a serrious set of islands to the south to settle (4-5 cities worth) so I don't have to rush anyone any time soon. The bad news is I chopped stonehenge and that's pretty much the only wonder I put out. The rest of the hammers went to rexing. I think I'm going to save this start and play it out a few times. It has some interesting querks to it.

Settle on the plains hill stealing the bananas from the food-heavy capital. Settle on the right floodplain to work both fish. This will give you enough food to work all of the gold pits (although getting to calendar will be a priority because you can't farm that banana by the looks of it; also the 2nd gold pit will probably have to be worked only at the happy cap, which is ok).

Advice on Zara: War elephants and catapults; you might want to settle on the desert tile 1N of the mountain first to deny him the corn and to ensure yourself the ivory

Wow, that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside futurehermit. That's the positioning I ended up settling for yesterday. :) Good to know one of the better vets agrees! I also put one down 1NW of the clams on the plains island and one several tiles south of the mountain (that's about a 8-10 tile streach of jungle with another banana) and then rexed the islands.
