It is not that Fifty doesn't have the interest in coming up with portraits himself, in fact on Fiftychat he was coming up with quite a few ideas.
But there are plenty of reasons that such activity would result in better selection:
Smart as Fifty is, other people can still have insights that wouldn't normally occur to him.
Having an item picked by someone else reminds you of that person, and that makes the experience a little richer. Things we receive as thoughtful gifts often are more treasured than things we make on our own.
no clue as to what fiftychat might be but I'll take your word for it.
I was not even doubting that the selection would be "better" by whatever the standards applied might be. I was merely saying that it would not result in a "personal touch" and hence would be pretentious.
I could argue for some elligible persons, to pick one at random let's say W. Churchill. I could even argue for it. if there is such a thing as logic and reasoning to this I might even win the argument or not. dear OP puts said portrait wherever he puts it and what does that say? worst case scenario he picked something that, somewhat, refclects upon him irl due to something some random guy on the internet thought would be fancy if he were the type to hang portraits...
then again, who cares? hanging portraits is, unless you have been elected to a public office, just the next step up from displaying Duran Duran posters on your wall. and I have done that in my youth so who am I to cast a stone?
