Here's the situation:

My first emperor game, big and small, default settings.

I was exploring with my warrior to the south, figured out that it was a dead end that could be easily blocked off, and then had the warrior killed by barbs. Built a new warrior, explored north. The russians are due north of me. I believe it to be a snakey contenent based on the fact that there's 2 other civs and they have to be somewhere to the west.

Anywho, my real question: Where to put the second city? I want to expand towards the russians (just because) but that's alot of jungle.. on the other hand.. those are some nice resources up there.

I would appreciate any advice I could get.

If you are trying to block the russians I would settle 1W of the Bananas. You would block the direct route to your capital and that city would have fish, pigs, silk and bananas in its BFC plus it is on a river for fresh water health bonus +2:health: . But I would explore further since that may not block Peter since there is a lot of unexplored territory to the NW of your capital. And I would definitely make IW a priority with all that jungle.

I would go for the tile above the bananas for a block city. Its on a hill so a good defensive postition and it would let you get the whale resource.

My third city would be one west of the pigs. it would make an awsome GP farm.

And of course IW is a must. I wouldn't be suprised if there isn't some Iron in those hills.

My first question is why are you placing your second city on the 113th turn? By now shouldn't you have placed it and your third?

My next question is what have you been building?

Marathon speed, have lost 2 warriors exploring the land I've revealed so far (1 poped a barb hut). Have already built an escort for the settler which will be done in 2 turns (chop + 1 pop whip). I've had a bit of bad luck, but I'm not that far behind.

I would still place where I said to block the Russians.

My last game I did something similar to the Americans and it effectively took them out of the game, cause they could not get that second city until they made a boat. Slowed them way down.

I later took washington with swords. I then made peace when the landmass was mine. Once I had Grenades, I mopped up their remaining Islands. Anytime you can fence in an AI, its a good thing.

Blocking them north of the bananas will hurt your research bad. No tile improvements and no production till iron working. Just a fishing boat will take at least 30 turns.

I'd settle Second City 1 west of the piggies and try to jump to the northern coast from there to effectivly block the Russians off. Or:
In 9 turns you will find out if there are horsies in your capital. Settling 2 tiles west of Piggies will give you 3 more forests to help chop an early chariot blitz to take Moskou. But I'm not sure how much war chariots go for these days?

If you are playing Hatty put it above the bananas.

If you are playing Ramses put it above the bananas.

Anytime you can strangle the AI its a good thing.

In the end decide where you want to take your civ and run. You could do all of the things we have suggested and it will come out 1000 different ways.

Thats why I love this game.
