Help please: Video Memory Problem

Old computer crashed, tried to install CIV IV (with patch) on a new computer. Everything seemed ok until I started playing. After chosing civ, map etc. but before I get to see the starting point, the game crashes with the following error:

"Your system has run out of video memory. Please trying reducing your video settings" and "Run time error"

What can I do to get the game to run? I'm not a computer wizard so please explain in details. Thank you so much

I guess by reducing "video settings" it means lower your details and such.. perhaps set your graphics level to low and tick some of the options like "Disable Effects" and choose "Display Single Unit".
