A friend and I are wanting to set up a a PBEM game but are unable to. On both of our computers we get our username/password rejected. We're playing with the "Beyond the Sword" expansion pack.

What are we doing wrong? Do we need a certain kind of email to accomplish this? I'm using an email address through my personal website (hosted by GoDaddy) and he's using a Yahoo account.

Civ 4 BtS or other Civ forms you don't usually need the server username/password. We leave it blank. We only enter a password to open the turn to avoid opening turns not our own. If I misunderstood you, sorry.

When we enter the multiplayer section of the main menu, we choose "Play by email". When we begin setting up a human player, it asks for Leader Name, Civ Description, ...(blah blah blah)..., Civ Password, E-Mail Address, and SMTP Server. We enter our respective email addresses and SMTP servers, but when the first civ to move finishes his turn and tries to send the game state to the next player, we get the error jsarber spoke of.

Attached is a screenshot of the same error that i'm getting with my Yahoo account. Of course I used ficticious emails and such for the example. The error ends just before the second "Failed to send email" message.

smtp.atlanticbb.net or smtp.comcast.net, etc; your internet provider address goes there. That's all I know that people put in. User name and password may be needed but I haven't nor have those I play with. You can use yahoo or gmail or whatever as your email address but the provider is the smtp.
