Help with starting up nation

It seems that every time I start a new game all the AI nations form an alliance to attack me by the 5th or 6th turn and there is no way I can survive all the warriors they send at me. This is really frustrating because I don't really get to play the game. Is this some sort of bug or am I doing something wrong?

What level are you playing at? What interactions do you have with the AI before they declare war? How do you even find multiple other civs by the 5th or 6th turn?

I think you are not quite accurate here. You need Writing to make an alliance. I doubt anyone has that in the first five turns. You also need to have contacts and it is not likely that many nations have contact with more than a few nations in 6 turns.

I would expect that on Regent or lower, certainly lower, the AI will not DOW anyone. They often will not even attack an empty town at that point. Are you playing some sort of a modified game?

Well by turns I mean the amount of times I have to hit the spacebar (I'm not sure what constitutes a turn... Sometimes everything just happens without any input for a long time), but it's on like the middle setting, which I assume is average difficulty, and I'm can almost make swordsmen when they start declaring war on me. I'm playing on my brothers computer so I'm not sure if there are mods or not. When they declare war it's not all at once, but they usually come in pairs every 5 minutes or so until everyone is against me.

Welcome to the Forum, Eraman. I am not near the expert that the previous posters are, but what I would recommend is playing on the Chieftain level, on an standard archipelago map, with no more than 3 opponents. Choose a civilization like the Dutch for yourself, and make sure that none of your opponents are Seafaring civilizations. Then you will have time to develop your civilization and learn the game mechanics without having the AI on top of you.

Ha! The only expert here is vmxa, not I.

Now I recommend you go into the game settings and turn on the option that makes it wait at the end of the turn. This will make the game move a bit more at your control.

Agreed!

As for nations declaring war on you, you can reduce the chances of this happening to you by trying to keep them sweet. If you don't want to be at war with a particular civ, take the opportunities of trade when you can. (Be careful if you accept gpt deals that they may not be able to afford later on though.) Consider setting up embassies if you can afford it. See here for further details on how to manipulate the AI attitude.

If despite your efforts to keep on good terms a nation declares war on you and your forces are stretched, then you are at risk of other nations joining the fight. This could be because they sign an alliance with your enemy or maybe just because they see you as weak and decide to seize the opportunity. In such cases try to get some allies first, thus placing your enemy under threat of being dogpiled. If I'm not ready for multiple enemies, I'll ensure that my neighbours are my first allies. Those that are further away will not be on my doorstep straight away should they declare and this will give me time to get some friends to join me against them. If you play it right, you can actually get your friends to deal with your enemies and you can spend your time developing your cities or attacking the one enemy that you wish to take land from. Just be prepared to keep the alliances going-don't ruin your rep over it. Your friends may make peace after 10-15 turns but just drag them back in again with an offer they cannot refuse. You will need embassies to get alliances though.

Hope this helps a little.

Hey everyone, thanks for your advice. Getting allies early on really helped with stopping all the attacks on me as they mostly fight each other now. Hopefully this trend lasts long enough for me to fully play the game. :)
