I am trying to gather a great (or rather great for me) amount of information about the Second Great War. I thought that I would ask here as most the people here seem to, not only know there shtick but, have more then abundant opinions and resources to draw from. Following is the list of the kinds of information that I am looking for:
What nations and peoples where major contributors to the war. Im looking for a very global kind of scale here, so it would be good for me to know where and how these people contributed, in what kinds of numbers and who they contributed for/against.
Where were resources all drawn from? Everyone knows that there was a lot of tanks and planes in the war, but where did they get the resources to produce these weapons, or any other weapons like ships, guns, uniforms, etc.. In this area I am more interested in the major areas that vital resources were gathered from, then where every drop of oil came from (unless that drop was particularly strategic).
How many theaters were their really? I understand that since I have been primarily educated by an American system, my views on the war would naturally become those ideas that the government most wants to propose. Therefore I want to know what major areas the war was fought in, east and west Europe are obvious to me as is the pacific, but what other major areas was there combat in. What were the top 10, 20 or 30 battles for that region, who fought them and why.
What was the population of the world at the time in those important areas? Did some areas have massive populations while others where small?
Where were all these tanks and planes built? What locations were key to producing the massive armies that clashed in the battlefields? How important was the distribution on mfg. facilities to the locations of resources.
What were major military discoveries made during the war, what parts of weapons were improved during the course of the war. Did Battleships get better armor or engines, what evolution did the common infantry mans weapons get. How did tanks and bombers evolve during the war?
And most subjective of the above, when is the best time for a game to start retelling the war? The 20s, 30s or sometime in the 40s, could it be just after the invasion of Poland, or just before the invasion of France. What period makes for the most entertaining militarily conquest for all parties involved.
Also, note that as I am not a huge history buff, I do not necessarily understand all the factors that can alter how the above factors become relevant, or why they are relevant. If something above seems strange, irrelevant or childish, let me know, Im trying to get to the point where I feel comfortable enough with the war to make a game of my own.
