I have recently purchased a new computer - with one purpose only, playing Civlization IV.
The computer contains a Club 3D NVidia FX 5900XT 128mb graphics card, an AMD ATHLON 3000+ processor and 1024 mb DDR-ram.

The game can run on my computer, but not satisfying. Its running so slow that its ruining the gameplay. Sometimes it takes up to 15 seconds for the computer to react to a command..
I have tryed to set the graphic detail down to low, with no result.

Im am considering to buy a new graphics card with 512mb DDRII ram - would that help?

Please, help! Any suggestions to what the problem is?

It sounds like it's your graphic card more than anything else causing the slowdowns.

Download the latest drivers. If the new one gives you black screens, get the Beta version instead. Run with the lowest graphic settings in the game and turn off any AA here too.
Goto to 'Display' control panel > 'Settings' > 'Advanced' > GeForce tab > Performance & Image Quality settings. Here change some settings, AA either to App-controlled or Off. Image quality to 'performance'.
Civ4.ini tweaks, Bink16Bit = 1, AllowScreenshots = 1. If the video is slow and choppy and possible causing it to crash turn them off, NoMovies = 1. You're not missing anything anyway.

Try running with that and see if there is any noticeable improvement.

If not, one last thing you can try is increasing the AGP aperture through the BIOS. You will find it under 'Advanced Chipset Features', try either 128mb or 256mb. 128mb should be enough however. Doing this will only improve things very slightly at best (if you card is on the AGP port).

Last resort, upgrade the card to at least a 6600 with 256mb onboard. Works well for me.

Hope it helps.
