If the Heroic Epic increases a non-militaristic civ's chances for a GL from 1/16 to 1/12, then does it increase a militaristic civ's chances from 1/12 to 1/8?

If not, then why build the Heroic Epic when you're playing a militaristic civ? For the culture point?

The odds of leader generation for ALL civs, militaristic or not, is 1/16 without the Heroic Epic and 1/12 with the Heroic Epic.

The "militaristic" trait increases the odds of unit promotion (conscript -> regular -> veteran -> elite) but does not affect leader generation odds.

Are you sure? I thought militaristic civs get faster promotion and 1/12 GL generation instead of 1/16. Want proof? Look at Sullla's civ3 page and read his article about GOTM8. He talks a lot about how he liked the extra leaders Bismark gave him.

You know, I wondered myself. I thought I read it before in several places which always made me curious about the effects of the Heroic Epic on militaristic civs.

Yes, I'm sure (from a post by Soren Johnson - but it's at another Civ forum site and I won't link to another site here at CivFanatics :)).

I do need to read Sulla's story (I really enjoy them :)) but can't read through it all now.

Militaristic civs tend to offer more opportunities to generate leaders, but the leader generation odds are the same. What do I mean? A veteran militaristic unit has a 1 in 4 chance of being promoted to elite after a victorious battle against an AI civ. A veteran non-militaristic unit has a 1 in 8 chance. After 40 attacks, the militaristic civ should have around 10 elite units; the non-militaristic civ should have about 5. 10 elites = 10 opportunities to generate a leader per turn; 5 elites = 5 opportunities per turn. Fighting a lot (and wisely) with a militaristic civ will give you more opportunities to "ring the bell" in the 1/16 die roll -- but it will not change the die roll.

For lots of good info (from Firaxis) on the militaristic trait and goody hut possibilities, see sumthinelse's thread here.

Partly true, but there are other factors:

  • armies
  • barbarians
  • attacking vs. defending (when defending it reduces probability by 50%)
  • whether the elite unit has generated a leader before
  • you can't have 2 leaders at the same time
  • naval and air units can't create leaders
