Heroic epic, West Point, and Unit exp

Ah yes, I forgot about that. Do you actually get XP for those free wins though? I would have thought that'd be a bit frowned upon, since even getting the capped 10 XP from a win is pretty major.

and anyway, the xp you may get from barbs is topped at 10 too, so it's irrelevent.
I forgot about the total 10 XP limit for barbs, sorry guys.

Hold on. I thought I just read that you always win your first fight against barbs. Is this true? It could make a bit of a difference to my early game strategy, if so.

It certainly was true and I don't believe it has been removed. It depends on the level your playing at (so I wouldn't rely upon it).

Info for Civ4 1.61 (not sure if it has changed for Warlords):

Settler - 5 free wins vs barbs
Chieftain - 4 free wins vs barbs
Warlord - 3 free wins vs barbs
Noble - 2 free wins vs barbs
Prince - 1 free wins vs barbs
Monarch - 0 free wins vs barbs
Emperor - 0 free wins vs barbs
Immortal - 0 free wins vs barbs
Deity - 0 free wins vs barbs

Yesterday i played archipelago mp and the only barb i saw was the one warrior that appeared when i popped a hut with my warrior. It was noble and my warrior lost. These free wins do definitely not exist in MP on noble.

There is something to explore here.
I usually play on monarch so I just cannot rely on those free wins, but I have a few things to test:
- is it only on attack?
- does it apply to all units (= including animals) ?
- what's the exact result of a "free win" (are you hurt or not?)
- do you get full XP for those?

From what I remember of free wins from when I played on lower levels:
- No, both attack and defence
- Yes
- No damage
- Yes

- No, both attack and defence

I would say only attack. I started game (prince diff.), added a barbarian modern armor next to my warrior and my warrior got destroyed. I added 2nd warrior for myself and attacked armor and warrior won without any damage.

I think I'll err on the side of caution until you guys can get your story straight. ;)

 That sounds like the most reasonable course to take. Even with generous free wins, you'll hardly find yourself at a disadvantage for not embracing them.

Those free wins are good for newbies of course, but for HoF competitors, they certainly have exploitable uses.
Let's assume it's attack only : it would fit in what Leveler, Gigaz and Greeneyedzombie said. leveler's test being exactly what I intended to do, seems a valid test to me.
So how about a little abuse free XPs?
only defend until you can see enemy axemen (or at least archers)
then bring your first warrior, 0 xp, to the field and attack a strong barb on defensive terrain.
boom 10xp = heroic epic possible.
You can even go a bit further :
attack barb galleys with your unpromoted galley and make it climb the xp ladder "for free" (promoting navy is always a bit hard without this trick, isn't it?)
You can also promote your first archer for heavy CG duty if you're protective :
attack an axeman on defensive terrain, should earn level 4 if you start with 3 xp. This level 4 protective archer will kill an enemy army all by himself
