Hexagonal Map of EARTH!!!

It's not a wacky idea, I did this in some of the maps I made for Civ IV, but it looks really ugly with the way the rivers look in Civ IV. From the screenshots it seems like this will look much better in Civ V.

Ideally, city states will be freely modable which would allow for Copenhagen or other Skandinavian cities to be included in the map. But that remains to be seen.
Aye. I guess the exact Civs will have to wait for Civ5. :p I look forward to what you are to do with the world map!

For those of you asking about my map's size:
My map is roughly 650 x 400 pixels. Thanks to Mef, that equals 157 x 73 hexes!

For those of you complaining about Hawaii:
I had to resize the map I used to create this image. Somehow, Hawaii got lost in the transition. :(

figured I'd share the one I put together a couple days ago to see what it looked like, based off of the blue marble images from NASA then messed with in GIMP, approximately 150X300 hexes, much bigger and you loose too much detail, panama ithmus already doesn't connect at this scale, no Hawaii, And Japan is painfully small, and oceans are painfully small. Really made me respect the scale of the world we actually live on

If someone could make a spherical hex-map of Earth (with the 12 pentagons for curvature) and post it here, that would be awesome.

lolzwut. England is part of Continental Europe

Otherwise, decent for 150x300 hex.

at that scale? Yes it is a part of continental europe. The channel isn't big enough to merit its own tile (a river maybe, if we're in scale here).

Oh come on! The British Isles are famously cut off from the European mainland, complete with a maritime climate and infamous storms. We didn't get to be a naval power otherwise.

No channel, South America separated from North America, Southern Italy separated from the North? :D That's not right.
Just filling every hex with the predominant color of the corresponding world map area doesn't make a realistic map.

If you google for 'spherical hexmap' you'll find pictures like these:

Sweet, so now we can actually have a spherical earth map instead of some toroidal/cylinder/square map =D.

They could simply put the pentagons on impassable terrain tiles, if there are any.

Actually, to avoid having the pentagons interfere with the city radius, you would have to surround the pentagon with 36 tiles of impassable terrain.

In the thread that originally raised the possibility of pentagonal tiles they suggested that having a pentagon in your radius wouldn't reduce your number of tiles significantly, only if you settled on the pentagon would you be severely limited.

I'd imagine you could put a majority of the pentagons in the oceans, or at the poles where they would have an even more minimal impact. That said I wouldn't expect this to work in Civ V, the difference between a hex map and a hex-spherical map is a lot of code. If they'd developed something like this I'm sure they would have told us.
