Hides

Hides are animal furs. Ever see cavemen movies? They wear hides. (deer, bears, wolves, etc.).

Being an anti-fur person,I NEVER build them.

;)

hehehe..I never worked for Hudson's Bay Company ;)

I hat..disaprove of the use of fur.But I do eat meat and have many leather products so I'm not out there hugging trees and eating granola ;)

Nothing more horrible than scenes of Canada's once large seal fur industry.Sad thing is,fur is coming back again :(

to the original question:hides is trading commodity. When you build a caravan, you choose which commodity it will carry. In your city screen you should see a "demands" and "supplies",each listing 3 different commodities after.Demands is what your city wants.Supplies are what the city can build.Delivering camels gives 3 desirable effects:
1.One time gold bonus
2.One time science bonus equal in beakers to the amount of gold
3.longterm ongoing trade routes which add trade arrows to a city

The one time bonus is governed by many factors, one of which is whether a city demands that commodity or not.Demanded good bring in larger bonus".So if you see a city de4manding hides and one or more of your cities supplies hides, then build a hides caravan and deliver it to the demanding city.

Food caravans are more or less to be stored up when a city can not build any trading commodities. These can be used to build wonders or spaceship parts.Or they can used to swell cities populations well beyond what normal food levels will allow..but thats another topic.

There is a bonus with cities supplying Hides that they tend not to "run out" when you build one, so they are certainly worth building if you can find cities demanding them. The demand tends to disappear as the game progresses.

Hides were men's first clothing, whether you believe in Creation (Genesis 3:21) or evolution. Yes, there has been "cruel" methods of "harvesting" them, but it seems stupid to me to avoid using them for that reason, whether is real life or Civ. You lose big time in Civ if you do not make Hides because they are repeaters early on. You would not think twice about wiping out the Mongols...

well, the thing that makes fur wearing stupid and offensive (imo) is that we do not need fur anymore. We have far superior man made textiles now rendering fur useless except for fashion.I don't feel comfortable killing an animal so I can be fashionable.

Just my 2 cents
