So I thought this was absolutely hysterical...but note that the linked publication has less stringent language limitations than we do, so the link is spoilered.

"NSFW: Language"

Spoiler :
This is the now fixed link

Spoiler :
And before the science faithful spawn an entire generation of cows, yes I do know it was a joke...though like all humor its effectiveness comes from the truths that it skirts.

Well [word that is in the title of the article]!

The link is being censored so it doesn't work!

Working on alternative...

There is always looking at the address bar of the page not found error page and adding the appropriate four letters in front of the ing...though that is obviously a clumsy solution.

Okay...fixed

If one was to google the "name" bit of the url in the opening post one may come across the actual link as the top hit, which was probably edited by the auto filter to remove profanity. I suspect that linking to this site may be against the forum rules as it uses a naughty word.

I think spoilering the link with an adequate warning of content has been accepted as a solution, but I could be wrong. Anyway, the link works by just truncating it to the first couple words of the title of the article.

from the article said:
claims they were no nearer than prehistoric man to figuring out the Universe.

Oh come on now..

We've figured out planetary formation, volcanoes, earthquakes, and cheese formation. That's gotta count for something.

What do you think the truth that it is skirting is? Physics builds models that describe the behaviour of the universe as accuratly as possible, as a step towards describing what it actually is. Most if not all fields of science allow us to make things that do stuff we could not previously. Surely this means they have real value?

Those are tiny things in terms of "figuring out the universe"...on the order of recognizing a single character and calling it reciting the encyclopedia from memory...

Unless...

Cheese formation...

Are you acknowledging that the Universe is made of cheese? That would elevate this seemingly tiny bit of knowledge to an exceptional height!

I'm like 95% sure this was an Onion-style spoof article so I wouldn't take it too seriously ;).

Something doesn't have to be true to have value.

Hey, we've figured out how a lot of the main forces that drive the universe operate. We know what solar systems are, and galaxies, and so on.

Prehistoric man just knew that apple good. We're way ahead.

Spoil plus bolded "NSFW: Language" seems to be the mod-approved way to do it. As long as the link is pertinent to the discussion (which it is here)

Prehistoric man just knew that apple good. We're way ahead.

By observation at my local McDonald's, which offers apple sticks as a healthy alternative, we have moved from 'apple good' to 'french fries better' which would not seem to represent being 'ahead'.

Yeah, but we can eat fries while flying through the air.

Whenever prehistoric man tried to fly, he landed and died.

So you are saying we have improved our landing skills, yes? Flying remains basically unchanged?

All of this still seems very remote from 'understanding the universe', in any event.

Yes, we now know a lot more about how the universe works, including things like how to design planes so that they fly, and land, how to send things to the moon and back, and so on.

We understand very little about the universe - but a lot more than prehistoric man did.

Good stuff Mr B. I particularly liked "the height of arrogance is to think that (phrases to point out the insignificance of a particular human) could define god as being in its own image." (paraphrase, not quote, but it was to that effect).

@Warpus...I suspect that somewhere something that understands the universe is looking at this 'vast difference' in understanding that you are pointing at and delighting in the irony that this very day I pointed out to Mr B that no effect is too small to be measured, you just need sufficiently precise instrumentation.
