After the Red Army's brilliant offensive at Kursk last month that chewed up three German Armies and inflicted horrific destruction. It is decided to pull forces from Army Group Center and from Western Europe to mount a massive counter offensive. The majority of the General Staff feel the Red Army is at the breaking point and one massive German counter attack could deliver the knock out punch.
It is decided that Erich von Manstein will lead the combined attack on the Russian positions. The code name for the operation is Avenger to avenge the prior losses at Tula and Kursk.
