HNDY01 Babylonian Rampage (AWE C3C)

Yeah, none of our options are real good.

I think we all agree pillaging is our best shot.

Since we are thinking outside the box, should we abandon Pamplona and send both armies out to pillage? They could later hook back up when we get ready for the push to build a harbor town.

Getting both armies out will:

1. Give us opportunities for another leader. If an army stays in Sippar it will be the one defending.

2. Pillage twice as fast so we are facing weaker units that much sooner when we push north.

Maybe you should abandon Pamplona and send both armies to the north, and pack some defense into Sippar so they AI has a target. It has walls and barracks. If not that fall back to the tile N of the mountain & build a fortress so the AI has a target to attack. Thay apparently will not attack the mountain.

That leaves the tile to the right of our jungle city open to get past it and on towards the mountain. If they pillage the road between the mountain and the city and the cats can't retreat and units can't get to the front, it could be trouble. I was thinking of putting a fortress on road completing right now next to the city and then having the 2 group front. The bowman army on the road shouldn't get attacked and the cats and longbows should produce a leader sooner or later. The spear army will be off to pillage iron, horses and production.
Also some worker merges and get a couple settlers ready for later.
I'm praying for leaders here because we can all attest to the power of armies in C3C.
I'll be home at around 9pm pst and will post tonight.

NEED LEADERS! Yee-haw!

I think I agree. Lets send poth Armies north. That will give us until Nationalism to get the Iron and Horses if we keep pillaging the iron, horses, and Saltpeter.

If we wish we could send the next army we get north as well, but put a settler under it (as well as other units including a warrior to disband). We then have to take or raze Kades (Remember before Astronomy we do not have a coastal route with Kades there, and maybe not until Magnetism if Kades gets culture. and we settle right on the horses. We save up some money (if we can - we need 58*4 = 232 gold, less if we disband more units), disband a warrior, and rush a harbor. We may want to have one of the pillaging armies also join them??? Not sure. We may get some horses that will then help us advance. We could also send some workers to try to grab the iron, but I am less hopeful we can pull that off.

If we pillage enough then our continent will have nothing to trade with the other continent and fall behind in tech which will give us longer to before the really nasty units appear. Then the war for the other continent will be tough, but we will be fighting with a big base, and hopefully have the human advantage in modern warfare.

[Edit: If you don't think you can send both then don't. We don't have a huge amount of units at the moment. We can send the other one when things stabalize and we are a bit stronger. ]

Pre-turn 550AD – Change the N Gap build from court to spear. Would the court in 71 really help. I don’t know if it will ever get a court unless we cash rush it. Move bowman army up 1N into the jaws of the lions. Move 2 spears in pampalona back towards Sippar and abandon Pampalona. Now we are losing –11. Guns in 33. One worker for merge building in Ellippi and Nineveh and Babylon will pop one after current builds. Get a measly 38g for education from Arabs and then declare on both Arabia and China. We are now at war with the world! Give Shrups 2s tile to Uruk which does not lose the extra to corruption. Duct in 17.

IT – 3 sword, 3 spears and 2 MedI move up and our Army only takes 1 ZoC shot? – 11gpt.

[1] 560AD – Bomb on the stack. MedDI still there. Head army N. Road completes, workers putting in fortress.

IT – No attacks? In fact the units down to 2hp scatter. Palace expansion!
Nineveh – LB > Worker and growth in 2.

[2] 570 – Our 1st pillage is a game/mine tile NE of Adana. Bomb stack and Elite LB kills a MDI. A 73% vet bow knock down another MDI. We only have 3 towns building units after HE completes next turn. A potugese Carrack has cruised right by our southern shores. Still –12gpt Guns in 32.

IT – Heroic epic comes in along with 3 MDI’s and a PIKE! near Sippur.
HE > LB.

[3] – 580 – Cats are disasterous against the pike, missing first 5 shots, but finally get him down so that the E LB takes down a 3 hp MDI. Guns in 26 at –13.

IT – Lose one spear to MDI in Sippar and kill one MDI.

[4] 590 – Kill a 1hp Pike with E LB. Only 1 1hp MDI left with 3 swords and a spear parked on the hill NE. Compared to the Hittites we are STRONG? Guns in 25 –12gpt. 191g.

IT – 5 portugese ships show up off our E coast. 3 swords and the spear come to play too.

[5] 600 Pillage! Almost to iron. Bomb and kill 2 swords an a spear. Also take a shot with the E spear since there are no other units around and kill a MDI. Shuffle towards boats.

IT – Ships keep on cruising. No attacks. Army spots zulu sending Impi fodder towards us.
Babs- LB > LB
Nineveh – Spear > LB

[6] – 610 – Pillaging army jumps on Harran hill and sees a Spanish knight! Make a merge in Uruk. –11gpt. Guns in 22. 168g. Dead quiet at the northern front.

IT – We have a knight and an MDI in the favored landing zone, S of Eridu.

[7] – 620 – Our LB retreats the knight after two cat misses and then we lose 3 consecutive bowmen to a now 1 hp e MDI. A bowman pulled from Ashur kills knight and all we have left for the MDI is a 4hp warrior. Calc says 77% and he barely wins redlining. Slide a unit from Babs to Ashur for rioting.

IT – Palace expansion! No landings, but they are coming. No wait a lone MDI sits on our tundra.

[8] – 630 – 2 cats go ½. Bow takes him out with no scratch. No promotion either. Guns in 16 at –7gpt. This decrease was due to both losing 3 units and worker merges.150 in the bank. Harran gets disconnected from the front.

IT – Nada for attacks or drops. A new crew has come to Sippar. 2 spears 2 swords.
Babs – LB – Worker and growth in 1.

[9] – 640 – Lose 2 bows trying to take out a 1hp spear near Sippar. Long bow took out 1. Guns in 15 at –12gpt. 143g. We can go to guns in 12 at –12gpt but that wuld empty us and if we have saltpeter I’d like some cash. Up for discussion. Pillager on the Hittite iron.

IT – Chinese building Copes. Looks like Zulu may be attacking Harran next turn. Get this! They have 17 swords, 10 Impis and 2 archers W of Harran. The original 8 Impi “fodder” as I called it are still heading towards us. If that SOD does not attack Harran and heads towards us we’re in for a battle. Carthage drops off 3 AC’s, yes, S or Eridu on the Tundra. Hittites have dropped 2 MDI N of Mari.

[10] – 650 – Damn cats pull an O’fer on the AC’s. I have 3 LB’s and 2 bowmen.
LB wins losing 2. No promo.
LB retreats AC.
LB retreats AC.
Bow wins and I get my first promo. Was wondering if that would ever happen.
Bow wins. No more Carthage.
The MDI get bombed down to 2 and 3 hp and I have a LB that wins over the 3hp. I have nothing suitable for killing the last one so I have to swap a spear for a warrior out of Babs to cover Mari. New LB from Nineveh goes to Babs. Ellipi spears covers cats and Ellipi is undefended. Changed my mind and went after MDI with warrior losing him but Killing MDI with Spear covering cats. Sink a galley and duck into Mari. Bomb and kill 2 spears near Sippar with a warrior after 1 warrior loses. All redlined. PILLAGED THE IRON!

We are at Guns in 15 and +2gpt. 141g. It’s been heating up in the heartland and I’m saving here but I sure would like to know if Zulu are coming with that massive SOD.

We are definitely starting to feel the "emporer" part of the game. I am glad you got the army out and pillaging Barbslinger. That may help some.

We should decide whether we want to head E or W at the divide. I am thinking that the spanish are the biggest threat at the moment.

Also I couldn't resist a 5CC AW. It will be very hard. Join us if you wish:

HNDY01 - Survive

650 AD (0)
Hoo boy are we in trouble. We need some more offensive units, but man are there a lot of ships in our territory. Only goal on this turn is to survive. The Hittite Iron has been pillaged. I think I will head for the Spanish core with the pillaging army. I will second the motion that if that Zulu stack comes for us, we may have to retreat to the mountain.

<Return>

660 AD (1)
The Zulu units run away. :D
The Spanish units run away.
The Portugese drop off two Knights in our south. Bomb and retreat 1st Knight with LB, lose two Bows trying to kill them. Shuffle troops so that all cities have 2 defenders. LB kills 1 Hittite MDI.

670 AD (2)
Lose two battles at Shruppak, and lose the city. pRNG was not at all kind against damaged Knights, we didn't win a single hitpoint. Portugal starts Smith's. Regain Shruppak, netting 108 gold in the process and sinking 3 Portugese ships. Use proceeds to upgrade two Cats and a Bowman at Sippar. Sink Hittite Galley. Can't figure out Spanish troop movements.

680 AD (3)
Nothing much besides an amphibious landing by the Hittites. The artillery in Sippar are so bored they red-line a Zulu galley.

690 AD (4)
Kill first two Hittite interlopers. The second two may require drastic measures. Troop shuffle may result in Sippar actually getting attacked, but with odds greatly in our favor.

700 AD (5)
Win two, lose a warrior on the IT. Pillage three Spanish furs, send the Army back towards Harran, following a bunch of Spanish Knights.

710 AD (6)
Portugal start Magellan's. Zulu land a couple of Impi. I will try a neat trick, and block all possible retreat routes. Kill both Impi, kill Hittite Archer, then have to cover LB with the Spear Army. No routes to Fortress are possible, so easy retreat to status quo.

The Spanish Knights turn around, so does our Army. :crazyeye:

720 AD (7)
Portugal complete's Leo's, cascade goes all over the place. Turn begins with zero foreign troops within bombard distance. Just smack some boats.

We are starting to accumulate LB's on the front. One more leader and we can use them to push forward. The pillaging army is in Spanish territory, as I cannot figure out where the Spaniards are going. So I'll just put a hurting on them.

730 AD (8)
Accidentally attack a Spanish spear with the army :cringe:, and win losing 4 HP. By chance find Madrid.

Redline three Hittite units outside Sippar. Kill all three with LB's, no leader but another promotion. Kill Hittite Sword outside of Fortress, cover a LB with Army and man the Fortress with the Elite Spear. A few more rounds like this, and I would suggest moving on Adana. Sink Hittite Galley. Barely. Put up shore blockade on our midsection. Nothing better for the workers to do.

740 AD (9)
Nothing exciting happens.

750 AD (10)
Finally, a stack of Hittites where I can bombard them, and three elite LB's to fish with. Here goes: All 4 units red-lined, three elite wins, no leader. :( Fourth unit killed by vet LB. Not a whole lot of units from the Hittites anymore. We could move on Adana soon. Ashur to settler, Nineveh re-MM'ed to Spear.

Final Notes:
Gunpowder in 4 at break-even. We may have to pause there to run all cash for upgrades. I have no idea what is going on on our continent, but we're playing 1-on-1 with the Hittites right now, and they can't even get an attack off. This is a terrific opportunity to move the front forward by a couple of cities. I still like the two Hills on the previous dotmap. I would probably give the Hittites a couple of more turns to send units to be slaughtered at Sippar, then move 6-8 LB's covered by the army to raze Adana. It is only showing a reg Spear as top defender, so we shouldn't need artillery to take it. Maybe take the Bow army for a spin around Spain, and then meet at Harran.

I have left a few LB's scattered around our empire, as the biggest threat right now is a landing. No real method to where they are, if Ted wants to shuffle them about.

No picture, as nothing has changed.

Typical! The Carthagians appear out of the fog and land a stack of 4 reg Ancient Cav & a reg Warrior SW of Mari. The Spanish land vet Knight, MDI & Longbow E of Ellipi. Well, we got off lightly there I think.

We'll have to concentrate on defending out core until the forces at Sippar produce another leader. It's just too risky at present to be thinking about capturing Adana.

The Situation
Hndy01-850AD.jpg

Notes
There is a 4/4 Knight NE of Northern Gap. I've left a slave as bait and added enough units to the nearby cities to prevent an easy capture.

Sippar has had a breather this turn but will probably come under strong attack again next turn. The Fortress (NE Sippar) complicates matters because we need to defend that as well. It might be worth Pillaging the Fortress & road then pillaging the road SE of Sippar to create a killing field.

I think we're going to have to work very hard not to lose this one. We have no Iron, Horses, Saltpetre or fresh water.

It's only a matter of time before someone starts landing Cav and Spears just aren't going to cut it. We're struggling to fend off 2 stacks at a time. If we get 3 stacks landing on the same turn then we're history :(

Short of lining our coast with units, there's no way we can keep them from landing and the best place for them to land is between Ellipi & Mari. So it's important that the next player doesn't seal off that bit of coast otherwise they'll just head further South before landing and we don't have the troops down there to contain them.

The Zulu hordes arriving at Sippar have put paid to any attempt to push North until we have killed them and that's not easy in that location with all those jungle tiles & no roads.

It took me over 6 hours to play these turns so we might need to go to 5 turn sessions.

The save is > here <

Ted

No saltpeter. Ugh!

We are a waterless, resourceless civ

It sounds like we are really starting to feel the brunt of the Empire level AI as well.

Did we have any luck finding Spains Iron and pillaging it?

Handy, do your best fishing for a leader. Boy do we need one!

I think the key here will be: ARMIES, RESOURCES and did I say ARMIES!

a) Getting some more pillaging armies to take out the Hittite, Spain, Zulu iron and salt or horses before cavs.
b) Army to escort a settler to horses and salt. I don't know where the, did I understand right, the only continental salt is but hopefully near a harbor area.
c) If we can obtain the horses and salt we have a much better chance.

Getting the salt will also provide muskets for cav defense. Our only defense against AI landing cavs will be attacking first with longbows when we will be A4 vs. D3. Either way we must maximise our leader opportunities.

Lucky leader fishing Handy!

barbslinger,

I did everything in my power to maximise our leader chances. I think I had 17 elite wins but luck wasn't with us.

I totally agree that we're not going to be able to make any progress without another Army to take the fight to the enemy.

The only Saltpetre visible is way over in the Western Zulu lands, far beyond our reach at present. We can't even reach the Iron :(

Ted

I fully realize that you were undoubtably leader fishing. Perhaps, no I am stating the obvious that we need leaders. I wrote it because that was plaguing my mind at the time. We as a team have gone leaderless for 30 turns now. Not that we haven't been trying. I even went as far as taking an elite spear on offense. It is just frustrating when the post comes in and a quick scan reveals no leaders again. I in no way meant any offense Ted.

As a cheer to the next King, Leaders, leaders, leaders!. My dollar says Handy gets 2 of them so we can get out of this mess soon.

barbslinger,

no offense taken. I was just echoing your frustration at our lack of leaders despite trying our hardest :)

Re-reading my post I can see that it's badly worded so my apologies for that.

Ted

Got It and reading the reports now.

Turns I’m inclinded to leave it to the player as to whether they choose to play 5 or 10. Sometimes if you are in the middle of a campaign, or have a few slow  turns you may choose to play 10. If you are pressed for time, or it’s taking 6 hours, then 5 is certainly okay. RL does require some time occasionally. :D

If anyone thinks some people playing 10 & some playing 5 will mess up the flow of the game, please speak up. This is just a thought. If 10/5 is too confusing, we can just go to a 5 turn rotation.

I've got two weddings  to attend today so I may not post until Sunday.

For the reasons outlined by Handy that sometimes you may want to see yourself through a campaign. There are other times when you have 2-3 sg's you are up in and you can't spend the 4-5 hours.
Here's hoping for some leaders Handy!

THE END IS NEAR :help:

Pre turn still 850 BC
There is only 1 unit in Itswaytoocrowded, so I moved a second unit there.
Move the worker 1 square to get him closer to the trebs so they can hit the knight next turn. I hope he takes the worker bait. Good Idea Ted. :D

We are waaaaay behind in this game. No rivers, no horses, no iron, and now no salt. This would be a killer on Monarch.

I’m following Ted’s suggestion to pillage the fortress next to Sippar. I’m not sure we could hold both Sippar and the fortress square. So the army pillages the square and moves back to Sippar. It’s no jungle again with no road. I pillaged the road on the first pillage, the fortress went down on the second pillage. Seems like it should be the other way around, or give you the option to select which improvement you wish to pillage. Reminds me of how angry I get at my artillery commanders when they fire and take out a marketplace. Lousy marksmen.
On the bright side, Zulu Impi attacks should give us lots of leader chances.

IBT
We are in deep doo-doo.
Arabia drops an Ansar warrior and an archer near Mari.
Eight Spanish knights (7 veterans) come out of the fog near Sippar. They are on the hill next to Pamplona’s ruins.
Several more Zulu arrive near Sippar. The current Zulu stacks total 38 units in all including 15 swords and a few archers.
A stack of 4 Portuguese Carracks move towards Mari. If they each hold 3 units, we are in trouble.
The Knight ignored the worker-bait, and killed a spear in Itswaytoocrowded
Ashur – LB – LB
Eridu – spear – spear

Turn 1 860 AD
Bomb the Ansar and the Knight to red line.
LB from Babylon kills Ansar
LB offs the Spanish knight
LN kills the Arab archer.
There were no elites close enough to attack any of these 3 targets, except for a yellow bowman in Ellipi I wanted to heal.
I’m going to chop all the forest up north so if an Ai units lands on a square they get no defensive bonus.
Bomb & sink a Spanish galley near N Gap

IBT
Six veteran Portuguese knights get off boats next to Ellipi.
China dropped a sword and a warrior off right next to them.
We will start to lose core towns or trebs (or both) in the near future I think.
Combination of our Spear Army and spears kill 9 Zulu near Sippar. The Zulu had 3 swords they could have attacked, with but chose not to. They could have killed our army is they had attacked with all units next to Sippar.
Babylon – Treb – treb
Arabs are building Bachs
The 8 Spanish knights near Sippar left and went north. Maybe they are at war with the Hittites.

Now, what can I spare to put into this guy? I can’t really spare longbows, but what the heck. A longbow army it is, and maybe we can start razing some AI cities. I think first I’ll kill the Portugal knights and MI on our front porch.
Bottom line, I don’t think it really matters. We are going to start losing cities very soon at the rate Portugal is sending stuff our way.
LB army kills a knight next to Babylon

The situation at Mari stinks. It holds 2 redlined LB and 1 spear. Two MI attack next turn, and the Pike will probably start to pillage. After that the LB army can kill them.

At least we won’t lose a town next turn.

Notes
The end is near.
AI razed 1 city and I abandoned 2. They were all crappy little cities.
The Ai is poised to raze some important cities soon (if not next turn).
Three knights will be able to attack Uruk next turn versus 2 spears and an LB.
Shuruppak has a lone spear defender
I think Portugal will drop more units off next turn. They have at least 16 ships ferrying troops over from Portugal.
The LB army is on a banana NE of Sippar. The LB army is too little too late I am afraid.
