Uh-oh Handy!

AWE is in danger of becoming Always War England! :D

Who asked me to be in this game?

That's ok. Never played England so I'm up for it.
I gave Greebley my proxy - so he can make the call. :D

Roster and what I think are up to date selections
Greebley - Ottoman (but England's ok)
Handy - My proxy goes to Greebley
T_McC - England
Yom - England
Ankka - Ottoman, but Ok with England
Oblivion - Ottoman but OK with England.

EDIT - Ankka voted for England.

So it's England 2 Ottoman 4 currently.

If Greebley switches it's England 4 Ottomans 2.

Greebley Are the Ottomans your final answer?

Actually the Arabs sound interesting :joke: (maybe next game).

Lets go with England; first start we get.

Since I am up first, I can generate a start when I get home and play it. Does this sound ok? I would go with "random" for the wet, warm, age catagory.

England it is. Sounds good to me. Let's Play. :D

Next game – Arabian Archipelago
That will nicely neutralize the Arabs civilizations traits and their UU.

I still say England. Ottoman's have been done too often and we already won AWE with Spain.

Preturn: No food bonus seen.
3750 BC: Build a Warrior.
3650 BC: Well pooh! We step next to a hut and the very next turn a scout comes and grabs it before we can. Why do we always get the hard starts with the difficult to play civs? The civ is the Arabs.
We trade Alphabet for Warrior code and 35 gold. We then declare war and I kill the scout.

3600 BC: Build a warrior. I was originally planning on Barracks next, but this is changed to an archer.

Our capitol is in a narrow point of the continent. It is probable we will have two sides to protect (at least that is better than 3).

3450 BC: 3 Warriors and an archer is seen heading our way.

3250 BC(aprox): Build an archer. Start a spear prebuild.
I let warriors attack me across a river while in a forest. I kill 2 but the last one kills our valliant warrior.

3200 BC: Research on Bronzeworking drops. Arabs must have gotten it.

3150 BC: We learn Bronze Working and start Masonry.

3100 BC: Our archer dies attacking their archer. We are in trouble boys. One warrior to defend against an archer and warrior.

I am going to try a second time.

4000 BC: We are in the dead center of the map. We have 2 wines next to our start.
There is a hut nearby so I take a chance and start a barracks first (warrior could mean barbs).

3500 BC: The border expansion gives us Ceremonial Burial.

3200 BC: Finish Bronze Working and Start Warrior Code.

3000 BC: Build Barracks.

Notes:
There is a risk of getting contact before the Spear completes. I would rush it in that case.

All our units will be vets.

The real reason I built barracks first was to get the tech instead of barbs.

Is there something you like in trying to make a game as hard as possible? Arabs on archipelago, England on Pangaea...

Not a bad start, the second one, let's hope we get a spear in time.

Not a bad looking starting location, London can get to +5 food. Problem is, it's +5 food with 1 spt. :cringe: Think 4-3-3 rather than 5-5 for food surpluses so we can build something.

So we'll have to keep the capital large in order to pull shields. If we strive to keep London at size 5 we can get 5 spt and 5 fpt (2-turn workers w/Granary), or less food and more shields as I think we have 4 BG to play with. That would mean 10 spt at size 6 if we use a forest.

Lots of MM possibilities (and trade), but we'll have to get another couple of productive towns down quickly. SE-SE-S looks to be solid 2nd city as we won't have to cross the river to get there. No idea where the 3rd city would be, other than probably North. I think we get an extra trade in the city square by building on the Tobacco, but it might not show in Despotism.

Being smack in the middle will probably make this a loss, but who knows? :)

Turn 1 2950
We grow. Adjust slider
-1gpt

Turn 2 2900
-
Turn 3 2850
Mine done so we begin a road.
We grow in 3 and get our first spear in 3.
Drop slider. Still get WC in 5 now 0gpt.

Turn 4 2800
Mm to get the spear in 1, we grow 1 turn later.

Turn 5 2750
London – spear – spear
I was sorely tempted to go for a granary.
Adjust sliders.

Turn 6 2710
Road done.
Drop slider again. Now +2gpt, WC in2.

Turn 7 2670
Begin mine
We grow. Bump Slider.
After this 2nd spearman I’m thinking another worker and we chop a granary.

Turn 8 2630
Warrior Code – Masonry for walls in 12 –1gpt. 14 gold in the bank.

Turn 9 2590
London – spearman – worker due in 2 we grow in 3.
Green borders to the southeast.
Change sliders since we now have 2 MP.

Turn 10 2550
-

Notes:
No change in the map except for the borders and we have a mine now.
Not too sure about the second worker. Our workers may be hiding their butts soon if guests appear.
One significant problem with a coastal city is there are no “safe tiles” for workers to improve. The only tiles that are behind our city are sea tiles. The workers will have to work in a stack with spear cover. Therefore, you may want to switch the build to get another spear before the worker. Let’s hope we just see warriors until we can get our walls up. Rush walls if you have to, if London falls, we die.

I think the second worker is a good choice. We need to get our civ up and running.

I think we should place our second city in a different place than suggested before. The nice river spot would give us contact and it would be nice to grow a little bit first. We can leave that spot open for our 3rd or 4th city or when we already have contact if we want.

OCC beginning for AWE... is this a usual tactic or something you're trying now?

Green borders... if that is Persia we may want to get rid of them before they mass produce immortals. They are a pain in the neck. Really. If they get to attack, that is.

I think our OCC like setup has to do with the fact that we are high food and low shields. It is also more common to do so on emporer AW because you can need immediate defense from the larger number of AI starting unit. Also growing to size 6 before your first settler makes some sense because you get the maximum number of shields. We will want to build are first settler before we reach size 7 of course, but with a close enemy, we want enough units to be able to hold both towns.

That is not to say that warrior-warrior-settler isn't a decent strategy, but it is also a gamble.

The situation drives the strategy.

This is a very hard start for AW, maybe unwinnable since there are no "safe" spots to settle, improve and grow. We will have to defend each city from a bunch of units in the initial AI assault. Not too hard against warriors, but when the swords show up, it's a different story. All of the AI's can safely and quickly expand, we can't. Two spears in a city is a relatively safe play, 1 spear in a city is a risk it gets razed. Then we also need spears to cover the workers. That's a lot of unit support to pay combined with diffuculty in settleing. This AWE game will be hard because of our location in the middle of the map, opening us up to attack from a wide area. Not only attacks, but pillaging. Soon after war begins the AI will send spears to pillage our roads & mines. :(

The opposite is true in this AWD Zulu Game where we have a nice choke and are able to safely build towns with no troops in them.

This location would be hard even enough @ monarch. But the challenge is the fun. :)

I kinda thought like that, the situation is hard... and I saw the AWDG game.

I understood you understand challenges from the picking of the first start etc...

How soon can we get archers? Would a very early archer rush be anything to slow the close foe down? It was very effective in the 3CCAW game, but that was only on regent so the AI had a lot less troops defending there...
