HOF III August Gauntlet

Being picky is the way to get to a high position in the table. :)
Agreed. However it is so long since I've submitted a game for HOF that I'm playing an average start through to the end. I chose Russia and got lucky with an early settler but I'm now well into the IA and I still haven't had an SGL. A lack of techs from huts meant that I didn't get into the MA until circa 1000BC and rubbish luck when gifting AIs into new ages hasn't helped either. The lack of Pyramids has really hurt long term though and I won't beat the games I have in the table. It's good fun though and it's helping me remember how to play civ III.

If I can find time for a serious challenge to ignas' predicted date I might try Sumeria and only play on with an early popped settler and an AA SGL.

Thanks to superslug for igniting the interest again!

Soemtimes I think we overemphasize the date to the middle ages, to me the date to republic is as if not more important, if you hit the middle ages with say 15 turns per discovery you are not going to gain a lot on hitting it say 6 turns later with 8 turns per discovery, so counter intuitively when you get republic, sometimes it is better to turn down research and build up cash for rushing purposes

I've done a lot better with the Sumerians than with the Russians because I've had a reasonable empire entering the middle ages. With a lot of hut popping, I've hit the middle ages much earlier with the Russians, but by the middle of the era I've fallen behind because I can't research as fast. I'm not very good at fast expansion, and the Sumerians help me with my shortcomings. I don't think it is hitting the middle ages or hitting republic, but when you get a reasonable beaker rate. Time to the middle ages is only important for people who are much better than I am.

I'm switching from the Russians to the Sumerians just because I'm getting tired of being Catherine...

Changing the picture is harder.

I've finished and submitted. 1040AD beats my Russian game that's currently in the table but it's highly unlikely to win this gauntlet.

I got lucky popping an early settler close to Moscow, and with a grassland cow for each of my two main cities the initial start was pretty strong and early expansion was not too bad. However I didn't get too much luck with huts after this (loads of conscript warriors, some of which got disbanded on the same turn to reduce unit costs) so not too much benefit from the EXP trait.

It would have been so much better if I'd got lucky with an SGL for early Pyramids. I finally built them in the IA during my late GA to help speed up my specialist farms. I managed to grab 6 luxes with aggressive settling and a seventh after the Koreans attacked me so at least my cities were productive.

Free techs were also disappointing. My rivals failed to get the full set of first tier techs when gifted into each age. A bit more luck here could also have led to a more competitive date.

I finally got my first SGL in modern times, and a second one on the turn I converted my prebuild for the final ss part. I used the first to speed up my Apollo build but it really did nothing for my date. If I can find time for another attempt I think I will make an early SGL a prerequisite for continuing beyond the AA.

1040 is a good date from my point of view. I finished at 13xx yesterday and am not sure I could do much better. But it gets me ahead of Pacioli.

I looked at the Small Regent Spaceship entries in the HOF and noticed that the top entries had times used in the 15-20 hour range, approximately. By contrast, Spoonwood's #6 1550AD finish was under 4:15.

How about a gauntlet in which time used plays a part? Either some combination of time and finish year, or just time alone?

My game only had one city. That significantly reduces time, even if you think about every move you make pretty hard. An OCC gauntlet might prove interesting also.

I' m in 1000 bc. Doing 4 turn research while in golden age, 6 techs left to enter industrial age.but i wib't be able to finish before this gauntlet closes

Well, I'm happy. Sumeria in 1140. It was much faster than I anticipated. I got basically nothing from huts, but I got an ancient SGL and a zillion late game SGLs. I started with a cow and a river, and nothing much else. Even at the end of the game I only had 3 luxes of my own. I got reasonably lucky with era-change techs, though, and timed ToE right to pick up computers and miniaturization. My later SGLs went on SETI, Hoover, and the UN the turn I went modern (I had a prebuild for the Internet); another built Apollo and the last went unused. I played peacefully; I don't think anyone attacked me all game. It was lots of fun.

Sounds similar to mine, CKS.

Sumeria. Finished 970AD. Early-ish SGL for Pyramids. Hardly any luxes but stole some through aggressive settling and traded for a couple more. Relatively low commerce in core but at least with the Pyramids and agri trait I could get decent specialist farms up earlier.

I don't remember getting anything but barbs from huts and I had to research Alphabet as I didn't meet Korea or Greece for ages. Needed some techs from huts to stand a chance of beating my own game, let alone getting anywhere near Ignas' game. Have I got time for another...?

Not a great deal going on in the other Gauntlet but there's a fair bit of activity here. Given that an update is just around the corner, does anyone want to make a suggestion for the next one?

I started playing this one with Sumeria, but didn't have an early SGL or all that much, and stopped. I don't know if I'll finish it, and I'd have to find the save.

No.

Actually, I'll recommend this table. And for the faint of heart, read this thread to see how the current number one spot got achieved. Any second on this?

What about large, demigod, domination?

There are 7 spots free and it's not too difficult. It should be possible to push me off position 1.
