HOF Questions and Answers Thread

Hi

I have played HOF games before without trouble, but now I am getting an error "CRCs are missing".

I tried a search but it didnt turn up anything at all. Anybody have any idea how I can get around that?
Make sure you check the "Lock Modified Assets" option in Custom Game setup.

I thought I did, but after trying 10 times, giving up, posting, re-trying 10 more times, playing something else and starting a game.... I suddenly worked... :)

Strange tho... if you havent got the locked assets thing going on... then why doesnt it say "locked assets not checked"

Now, don't go trying to trick me with logic and common sense. :mischief:

Seriously, I think is says that too, doesn't it?

I notice that sometimes if I finish one game (or give up on a game) and then go back through 'custom game' and re-launch a new game that I get the "CRC' error. A simple restart of the game seems to get rid of this.

I've started to use mapfinder again with BtS and actually find the little messages (Alt-X to stop mapfinder, Game Trial = 55, Saved Games = 22) are getting in the way of a nice picture. So, I totally removed my interface (Alt-I). Now I get pictures of 'fog of war' because the screen doesn't centre on your units. Guess I have to run with full or some interface (Ctrl-I).

Not asking you to fix anything - just something for future reference (or historic reference if someone has already pointed this out).

I didn't think they came down any farther than the messages in V or W.

I think you are right but BtS moved that area to the middle of the screen and I usually play on a wide screen - thus V and W's messages were not a problem.

Sorry to change the topic. I have a small suggestion for the "Player Log"/"General Log" tabs. Some people play first turn 1 and some 0. How about normalizing the Log display so they match. If it starts on turn 0 just add 1 when displaying all the turns. I think "first turn 1" is better than 0 for display purposes. Another good reason for using 1 is that it makes the Diplo voting years line up on even years.

The blanks are: anilla and arlords!

I wasn't aware that they were showing different starting turn numbers. Could you point me to an example where they aren't.

I imagine that some would want to us to subtract 1 to make everything 'first turn 0' as MS and Firaxis intended, though. :mischief:

I think it was more Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie (inventors of C) that liked to start at 0. Djikstra also agreed with them.

The strange thing now is that my mapfinder isn't displaying any text ... but it is keeping the games that I wanted.

Edit: I remember now that I did modify my Civ4.ini file to remove autosaves. I also changed the following:

Civ4.ini said:
; Set to 1 for no on-screen event messages
NoEventMessages = 1

Is that the reason for not getting the mapfinder messages? What else will this remove? All event pop ups such as religions being founded, etc?
