HOF Questions & Answers

I'm really interested, where do we go now :\ Should I finish the diplo game I have and the current Gmajor or ...

At the moment there are 217 different settings of in total of 246.240 in use, that is 0,0009% of all possibilities. I think there is plenty enough settings to fight over to just start over?
Those who have the current medals are lucky that they will keep them?
It might be harder to gain them in medal score but isn't that anyway?
It will be very difficult to gain Crafty's score anyway but for some it takes time to complete the VVV.

Time to delete the HoF and start over after the patch?

RAs are completely changed. All Science and Diplo VCs will be longer, and therefore are unlikely to match the current games. (though, Science VC might be a bit shorter due to not needing the path to Globalization anymore) Science output is different as well.

Culture might get a bit faster, though every +100% buff got nerfed.

Domination... well, I'm sure the happiness changes might cause some initial trouble, but overall it's likely to be similar. (no RA spam help, but menh)

Yes, we probably need to ditch the new database and start over.

As I warned, Civ V is just too unbalanced to base a HoF on it yet. Back around the Beta Gauntlet 1 time frame, I warned that Civ V would be need to be endlessly patched to become a balanced and fully featured game. The new patch may provided true game balance, but many game features will no longer work as originally designed. I said that fully two years would be required to fix everything the "right way".

Currently, many balance issues have been fixed, but at the expense of lobotomizing the target feature, so that it no longer challenges and rewards players as it was originally designed to do. It will take at least another 1-2 years to fix these things the "right way", so well applied player skill/intelligence is rewarded with early win dates, but without the possibility of any exploitative tactics being responsible for the #1 dates.

Sun Tzu Wu is right that we may have to wait a couple of years before 2K finally decides that the game is complete and stop patching it. In the meantime I still want to be able to compete in some sort of HoF.

I would be very concerned about wiping previous games from the HoF. It would not be appealing to people knowing that whatever they submit may only last a few months before 2K decide another rebalance is required and therefore another wipe.

I think we will need to see how things actually play out before a general wipe of older versions is carried out.

The upcoming patch is huge and may change the game dramatically. I think the best way forward, for now, is to include a filter on the HoF for the version number (SV6 at the moment). I think it would be interesting to still allow comparison with prior versions and a filter system would allow for that.

In this way, if it becomes clear that certain game types have become impossible to beat then it would be easy for us to "ignore" the older versions. Enforcing SV7 min update and archiving, not deleting, upto SV6 would be one way of doing this.

In the meantime, Peets, yes I am lucky to have the medals I have. There are players out there that have very good quality games instead of the mass produced ones I have submitted. I, like others, have just been trying to increase the submissions on a table so that more silver/gold medals are possible to attain in order to get the HoF started. When the experts start challenging the golds I have then things will start to balance out.

Indeed, but if we get a heavy balance change every 6-8 months then there would be no room for a real HoF challenge if we always start over.

I guess we have to pray that the next update is the last of the major ones. Time will tell...

The best solution we can offer would be to add filters on version so we can have our cake and eat it too. It will take a bit of work to implement but it is possible.

The cake is a lie. ;)

(sorry for the spam).

yes, though I'm sure they'd be frustrated more by the total change in game play style and the fact that they'll never catch the prior scores than they would if their games got removed.

Obviously, a simple solution is to keep 'HoF v.1.1' as a 'no more submissions' section, but keep the data and the medals already received; but ensure the new version isn't comparing against the old version scores for the rankings.

In the Civ 4 HOF, one can look at results for "any" expansion and for Van, War, or BTS. Maybe this is the model?

These various patches of Civ 5 can be thought of as expansions, except that they are probably mutually exclusive for a given player. While in 4 you can still play Van or War after installing BTS, the same is not true of the patches. Well, unless there is some way to do a dual install. That was an issue for those of us in pitboss and SGOTMs where a patch would come out before a long slow game would be done. We could carry pre patch and post patch versions on our computers to accommodate both in Civ 4.

I don't think that Steam will let you have two different patch versions installed ... but maybe someone knows better than I?

I think you have to leave the existing results up even if it is in an "untouchable" section ("Civ V beta HOF"?). If the results are erasable by the next patch, who would bother to participate?

Of course, those 15 turn duel quick dominations will probably compare fine pre and post patch ... I don't recall anything that would change that gameplay in the patch. :mischief:

I think we have a problem. I just downloaded Khrax's G-Major 5 result and tried to load it. Spying people who know how stuff works ;) .. but it told me I do not have required DLC. When i copied my DLC content back it worked fine. I use only the common DLC content for the HOF games and not additional civs.
I remember 'being able to load the game' was one of reasons not to use DLC content.

Most of them pick their opponents manually to avoid the DLC content.

Removing all the DLC content when playing HOF is a nice gesture but not required. We will accept games as long as they don't use it.

GOTM has a neat replay tool. We looking to see if we can borrow that and modify it for HOF games.

What I'm trying to tell, is that You need to have the DLC in order to view these savegames. Which is impossible for people wo the DLC.

Players should voluntarily remove forbidden DLC when playing HOF games.

The HOF should require it; they are being too lax with regard to removing DLC; a simple script can move the DLC out so the Civ V engine can't see it; after the game another simple script could move it back.

Its the latter point that is holding back the HOF and part of the reason I will not play HOF Civ V games. The HOF may think their lax stand will encourage participation; many players do not agreed. Being able to load other player's starting and final saves is part of the reason the HOF exists.

Unlike Sun Tzu Wu I would like to have the DLC included. Currently You don't use the DLC Civs, but the save still requires that code. But either way I think removing/hiding the DLC directories or allowing to use additional civs both will work. The latter is much more fun :)

I bought all the DLC at once, so I'm not really sure which civs are vanilla and which aren't. Is there a list of the civs that are allowed for Civ5 HOF play?
