Hoover Dam useful?

Hoover Dam rocks my friend. I'll often B-Line for it in the tech tree if I'm a little behind in tech coming into the age. The AI wastes it's time on other branches, so not only do get the Dam first and get a huge boost in all (well, most) of my cities, but I'm researching a branch of the tree that allows me to trade techs with the AI, even though I'm a little behind.

Do you breathe oxygen?
o Yes - it's the stuff of life
o No - can't stand that crap!

Somone would have still answered 'no' for that
:rotfl:

51-0 and counting

Okayokayokay alright ;) seens that I have been playing on too easy levels since now :)
Any 'no' voters yet? Just for statistical reasons ;)*g*

HD gives a hydro plants to all cities(or on a continent) which boost 50% production AND it allows u to build another plant. It is definately a must have, I always go after electronics( I would rather give up my theory of evolution to hoover dam i.e. stop building it and let the AI have it, or change it to HD) I think the production bonus fopr hydro + solar is 150% X 150% = 225% production (i think) hydro + nuclear is 150% X 250 % = 325% (i think)

Hey, I prefer a casual mix of nitrogen and ethanol, none of this oxygen rubbish for me...

Hmm. Same percentage as Saddam Hussein's reelection -- 100%.

Edit: Spelling

Well, someone had to do it. :D

I'd much rather spend thousands of sheilds mass producing coal plants.

Nah, I win the game before it gets discovered.
Actually I voted yes.

SO ... WHO *did* vote No in the poll ??? (Wasn't me!)

IF your a pebble, hey, you know its too late now! At least, according to Kosh ...

65-1 at this time ...

Although it's probably not serious, thanks for saving my honour ;) , now I can sleep in calm again.

At the moment, I'm playing a game at normal difficulty and got furious when I discovered that the pesky Chinese had completed the HD one turn before it was finished in my city! It's AWFUL !

Yes I was kidding. The HD is on my priority build list. Missing it is grounds for war ASAP. ;)

When I'm playing the Apolyton University mod (which makes Longevity available with Sanitation) Longevity (plus loads of workers and Hospitals) is a slightly higher priority for me, but I'll give up Universal Sufferage for HD any day of the week. I usually shoot for all three (plus TOE........I'm greedy :) )

HD is great, but not that great ;).

A couple of rules of thumb: (1) all modifiers in the game work against the base value and do not modify each other; and (2) you only enjoy the benefits of one power plant in any given city.

Putting these two rules in to action:

Rule 1: As a hypothetical, let's say we have a city producing 20 shields. A factory boosts this by 50%, making 30 shields. Most power plants add another 50%, but another 50% of the base 20 shields, so now we're up to 40 shields. A nuclear plant would add 100% of base, making that 20-shield city produce 20 + 10 (factory) + 20 (nuclear plant), or 50 shields total. Anytime you have moidifiers, add them up and then apply it to the base, so factory = 50% and plant = 50% makes 100%; apply 100% to base.

Rule 2: Only one plant's effects per city. Same hypothetical. HD gives the effect of a hydro plant in every continental city - so you will see a maintenance-free hydro icon in the city improvements list. Even if you build a coal plant, you will still see the hydro icon in the improvements list (whereas without Hoover, the hydro icon would disappear and be replaced by a coal plant icon). Nonetheless, you do not enjoy the effects of both the HD-inspired hydro plant and the coal plant. Your output will still be 40 shields (20 + 10 +10), but you will also enjoy the pollution and maintenance costs of the coal plant ;). Adding a nuclear plant will increase the output, but once again you will not enjoy both the 100% boost of the nuclear plant and the 50% boost of the Hoover-inspired hydro.

I would like to represent my anaerobic clients and vote no for them. They think its horrible ;)

So I have to ask again: Does Hoover Dam bother with your nuclear plants? That seemed to me the only (but very severe) drawback.

Well guess the statistics show themselves the answer to this thread... Still one single person voted no so far, but i guess t'is just for the fun of it

No - Hoover does not negatively affect cities with or without a nuclear plant, nor prohibit you from building one. Hoover will give the effects of a hydro in each continental city . . . so, 50% production boost, no upkeep, no pollution. If you like, you can certainly build a nuclear plant in a city that already enjoys Hoover's boost -- you just need to invest the shields in building the plant, pay the maintenance, and live with the risk of a meltdown, but you will get the 100% boost provided by the nuclear plant instead of the 50% provided by Hoover (what you won't get is both the 50% Hoover boost and the 100% nuclear boost). In other words, the decision to build the nuclear plant in any given city can be made entirely without reference to the fact that the city currently enjoys the effects of Hoover Dam.
