How about a map with relatively rapid ice ages/global warming?

This way, land bridges may form with the fall in sea level due to ice age and/or the formation of ice bridges.

The engine can't handle changing base terrain tiles.

Wait for Civ 6 and my guess is that a 64-bit engine could indeed handle it. Just wishful thinking, mind you.

I think part of the problem is that the graphics of the base terrain are generated based on the terrain of the surrounding tiles (so that the game world doesn't look like it is a bunch of hard hex blocks)

Which is why the world builder is in strategic view

They might have improved the engine to the point it could do some terraforming, but I really doubt it.

It's a shame the engine is unstable because you could terraform in 4.

not unstable, just with different assumptions (ie base tile terrain won't change)

That said, I think they might be able to do some Actual terraforming in this one (the miasma overlay is semi transparent, you might be able to have an 'Earth overlay' that made the tiles look more earthlike)

A 64 bit engine for Civ VI is a must, in any case.

It will literally unlock a world of possibilities.
