How big can a city grow?

I have never really tried to get the biggest possible city population count but in my last game my starting position included 3 corn and 2 flood plains.

Granary matched with corn helped to balance out the flood plain health negative and I was able to get up to size 26. I got a little obsessed with micromanagement in an attempt to push for 30 but unhappiness and unhealthness kept me from reaching my goal.

I am sure that I could have managed a little better but since it is an odd goal to shoot for from the start, I dont think I will come across too many opportunities to try this again.

In conclusion of the babble, I would like to know how big a city others have achieved.

I've had cities in their 30s but never any really pushing 40...

A city can theoretically grow to unlimited size by means of the Great Merchant superspecialist and a whole lot of Future Tech.

There exists somewhere in these forums a screen shot of a legitimate 42-population city. That's the highest I have ever seen. The largest I have had while playing is 32.

Unhappiness shouldn;t be a problem if you built Globe Theater in this city. With health being the only concern, you should have been able to hit 30 easily.

I made a (in controlled enviroment, (worldbuilder)) city of 77 in size... of course that would not qualify as a legitimate, but I will post a screenshot tommorow.

Very big if you're playing settler. Start in all flood plain tiles and use merchant superspecialists. Use environmentalism or research future tech.

Well Theoretically a city with ~1900+ Great Merchants (for Food) and ~1000 Future Tech levels (for health) and Globe Theater can reach the maximum population a city can have of 1000... of course the time required to do that..... (of course if that city was under Caste System and every specialist was a Merchant, It might not be too bad.

I had once a legitimate 42-43, growing on 42, decreasing on 43...sorry no screeny...

I've gotten one of my cities up to 33, but it was a GP farm. I deleted the game, so I don't have a picture of it

Hi,

today it's report day for Realms Beyond Epic 3, and one way to score points in that game was trying to have the largest city at game's end. Here's my result, a size 48 city...

Let's see what city sizes others will report about until closing day tomorrow... :D

Note that you can come up with even larger cities if you have a map with a better site, for example with some flood plains mixed in, or no hill at all.

Hi,

I would garrison that city with more than one spearman.
Not really necessary, considering that I had taken over the continent and the city was nowhere near the coast, so safe from any sneak attacks... ;)

(See my Epic 3 report on my site for more details)

Wow, 6 great merchants added to one city? That's amazing. O_O So many people... I bet that helps a lot with domination/diplomacy.

Actually, if you count correctly, that's 20 Great Merchants added. The city tiles produce 80 food (add them up, you'll see), while at the top it says 100, so the last 20 food must be provided by super specialists.
