How did I lose from here????????????

I'm posing this as a question really, to see if the expert players here can figure out just how it is possible to lose, from the situation in this save game.

To give a little background, I'm a novice. I've won the only 2 games I've played out to 2050AD, as Chinese, on Cheiftain.

This game is my last on Cheiftain, I'm moving up regardless. I was playing this to try for more advanced tech's, so I was playing as Persians. Still on chieftain, as I wanted to see what they were like. I'd had a very early war, with Germans (to make a bit of room) , and another in the early Industrial period, with the Zulu's, which they started.

So, rather than trying to win, from an impossible position, try to guess how I lost, from here.

You must have built the UN and lost the election.

Correct :)

Actually, it was the second election, I drew the first one, with Hammubarrywhatshisface, of the Babylonians.
Ghandi won the second, although he wasen't even in the first, Only myself, and the English voted for me, second time.

I had no idea about the mechanics of the Diplomatic victory. I knew it was there, but not how it worked, never got as far as the UN before :crazyeye:

I'm not exactly sure why I lost the election, it was either the fact that I went warmongering ( having built all these nice weapons, I wanted to see them in action, so picked on the Japanese, as I had had no dealings with them previously), or the fact that I had built Nukes, both tactical and ICBM (haden't used them though, but I remember from civ2 that just building them makes you rather unpopular). Probably both
I got a bit annoyed, and, in a fit of pique, selected 'play a few more turns', and tried out the nukes, on everybody who voted against me. Childish I know, but fun.

Ah well, live and learn, now for Warlord...............

That's what we have ctrl+alt+delete and autosaves for ;) :p

You should have bribed some AIs you were neutral with.

I have no idea how to do that

I'd never got to a point where diplomatic wins were possible before. I'll take it as a lesson :)

Note to self; don't build the flaming UN, when intent on warmongering

I did consider a reload, but haven't resorted to it so far, and I wanted to go up to Warlord.

Besides, I allowed myself some petulant, childish behaviour. With nukes :D

Always build it, just don't call a vote.

I didn't call the second one.

I don't know how it works, I think I called the first one. Does that set it in motion, so there's an election every so often?

I can understand building it, if it gives you control over it. So no other civ can call a vote.

Or at least, finish off all the civs you've been evil to. That way, they can't vote against you. :p

No, it should ask you every time. Just never call elections at all.

It just popped up on the screen, asking who I wanted to vote for. I never called it up  is there a keyboard shortcut, that's not listed on my keymap? ( I may have pressed it accidently, if there is).

I was busy "Field Testing", my shiney new weapons at the time. It annoyed me somewhat, as I was only up to Jet Fighters/ Cruise Missiles/ Nuclear Sub's and so on. There's still more to come, and it was only about 1950AD, so plenty of time to get (and, ahem!, "test") the later stuff.

I may turn diplomatic victory off, untill I'm sure about it :)

Oh, my approach to warmongering is straight out of the "Roman Book Of Warfare". No peace treaties, ever. The war ends with total dominace, and the enemy becoming wholly subservient.

Unless, of course, I'm losing :mischief:

I don't, as a rule, break treaties. If I'm planning on "expansion by force", I don't make treaties with the civ I've got in mind. The Germans had had to go, early, there were too many civ's on one continent, it would be a problem later. I did them with the '2 warrior gamble', although they re-appeared, at the bottom of the continent (no way they got a settler down there, too early for galleys, and they didn't come past me).

The Zulu's started on me, I finished it. They didn't know about the Cavalry stacks I'd been building in my main territory. Quick ROP with the Babylonians, and no more Shaka. :D

It automatically asks every few turns. I don't remember how often.

Thanks for the help folks :)

I think I get it now, once initiated, the UN will re-vote automatically. Don't set in motion, unless you're trying for a Diplomatic win.
