So I'm playing happily, it's the medieval era, I'm winning a way and suddenly, I've lost the game.

How?! The game certainly isn't going to tell me.

How on earth was this left out? No warning, nothing. Between this and the Hall of Fame missing... an otherwise great game is sorely lacking in giving me motivation to play it again.

Enemy religious victory maybe? If an opposing civ got ridiculous faith generation early game, they might be able to convert quickly.

If you're still in to the game, hit play one more turn. Victory conditions aren't the big reason civ is fun, they're just there, its perfectly ok to ignore them. That's also a way you could check, if you hit one more turn and check the victory progress screens you can see what happened.

Or reload one of the Auto-saves and check the victory screen before you get besten... Religous victory is the highest probability...

Still, I'm a bit annoyed basic things are completely missing from an otherwise complex and interesting game.

And that's civ VI in a nutshell, lol. (particularly about the UI)

Check the victory screen. At least build one Holy Site and collect faith, you might keep that in the Bank...
If one of your opponents gets too close to Religious victory you'll need one city with a different religion build a Holy Site there and pump out apostles to convert to that counter Religion...
This is just an idea, I didn't run into that problem, yet...

I'm in a possible similar situation. I have no religion on my main continent and only 1 Holy Site. I'm hoping to the (right) gods that I get some religion before Scythia sends her apostles and missionaries over...

Or just one apostle to sacrifice for the Inquisition, and spam out cheaper Inquisitors to clear out the primary religion from your cities / fight the primary religion's apostles from within your territory.
Just leave one of your cities with the holy site in the primary religion in case you find you need to switch back.
