I was playing civ a few mins ago and i was constantly firing on the enemy with my cannons. I was just wondering, when a cannon becomes elite, how does it become different from reg cannons? it dosent have a health bar so that couldnt increase.

i'm pretty sure taht bombardment units can't become elite. i've never had an elite cannon and it isn't an attacking unit, so it shouldn't be able to become elite.

Artillery units which have lethal (land or sea) bombardment can get promoted when they kill a unit :)
Their stats are unaffected though and it makes no difference whatsoever.

The H'Wacha is such a unit.

They have to have an attack of 1 or defense of 1.

For example, I give my workers a defense of 1 and when they defend themselves against a barbarian or some other Civ's warrior and win occasionally they will get promoted. I have yet to see a great leader from a worker (in about a year and a half of play this way), but I would think in theory it is possible (the worker would have to defend itself successfully several times, not likely).

I also give my explorers an attack of 1.

Sorry, I just relized I went of topic a bit.

I think that an elite h'watcha can produce a leader...

I know plenty of people... :mischief:

AFAIK H'watchas use arrows... you have to cut a string that sets off a chain reaction that ends in all the arrows getting fired somehow.

Is that true? I thought that you can only create a GL by attacking another unit.

It's possible both by defending and attacking but the chances are halved when defending, so you might happen to almost never see a leader from defending.

I once got a leader from a rifleman defending agianst a flood of swords. He died before my turn, though, and therein lies the problem with defensive leaders. Most battles are won by the attacker, since the attacker chooses whether or not to fight, so you don't get many defensive leaders who survive to the next turn.

I've never heard of bombard only units becoming elite from bombardment. Is this possible? I mean cannons for example have no HP. So how could it get promoted? But a unit that can bombard and has attack/defense/HP, will it have a chance to get promoted from bombarding, like an Iron Clad for example?

It becomes veteran; you just don't see it. In the editor, for example, you can change the rank of the units. Barracks do create vet artillery.

It's all irrelevant.

Sorry! The administrator has specified that users can only post one message every 30 seconds.

you know what rank the artillery/worker is by how high the dot is

Well, I suppose with units like TOW Infantry and Guerilla, which have bombard..
But wait that's not lethal bombard...Plus they bombard for defense only..Right?
Pah! Ignore my ramblings (wait then I shouldn't be posting in the first place if I want you to ignore me...BAH!).

i went to a museum here in korea a while ago and saw some real hwach'as. its a bunch of long spear/arrows with little firecrackers on them. all the fuses are linked together so you light one and all the rockets go off in rapid succession, shooting the arrows.

Byzantine Dromons can get XP (and even trigger a GA) through bombardment. Of course, it only improves the ship strength for ordinary combat.
It would be nice if artillery units profited by experience gains and got more accurate as they grew in XP.
