I built one at my homeworld but it doesnt seem to appear in any of the menus. How do I use it to transport food?

Freighters act passively. Once they're built, they just sit in a pool until they're needed. As soon as there is a planet with a food deficet, and annother with a surplus, one of your freighters will become active in order to balance the problem. The number of free and total freighters you have is recorded in one of the squares on the far right side of the main screen.

As an aside, moving colonists requires the use of 5 freighters for each unit of population.

OK, cheers, that makes sense now.

Next stupid question is how do I get some form of internal security? MOO1 had a little slider thing in the races menu, but this one only has my race bonuses. People keep nicking my tech and I don't know how to stop them lol

For spies to be trully effective you really need a +20 more than the race that you are spying on. I tend not to bother with the whole spying side of the game. To keep your spies effective you must keep researching the spy tecks over the other ones. The AI will always trade techs with each other, so you will never really have the edge in terms of spying. Besides, stealing other races tech is a quick way to WAR. My advice. Offer the techs as gifts before they rob you blind!

If you are already at war and do not intend to make peace, stick a few on them and anything you get is gravy. I do not allow myself to trade with the AI.

The only time i trade with the AI is when they have something useful that i am unable to research (eg: missle base - cus i researched auto factories). The AI will never offer you a fair deal when trading. I look at it as wot the tech can do for me rather than wot they are asking for it. They will only steal the tech from me anyways.

I just feel we have to big of an advantage in trades and it makes the game easier, si just won't do it.

So far, i've found the AI is more likely to demand one of my star systems than tech, to be honest...scum.

Besides, I've been using Creative races a lot, so I never have to trade to get missed tech...

I never use creative. NEVER. Thats just cheating in my book. The game is just too easy with creative. That reminds me of the phasing clock and time warp facilitator. Just shoot all your weapsons at target, then re-cloak using the extra turn. The game should have been patched to remove these cheats (statis field included!).

To call that cheating is insane. It cost an expensive 8 picks to gain very little, not exactly getting something for nothing.

In addition, it is just one more way to play the game. That makes replay value increase. Try playing creative race in a smaller map and get stuck next to two of the stronger races and you will find it no blessing.

You surely can beat the game easier with a UniTol race and I do not hear anyone saying that is cheating.

Phase and Cloak come so late that you could have won the game anyway, so they are not really a big deal. I do not use them and there is a bit of bug with them, but again it not like you wil not win without them.

How is it cheating? To afford creative and anything else you need to handicap your race quite heavily.

I tried using repulsive, but it makes every other race want to declare war on ye...attack-20% somehow also means the enemy gets the first turn in tactical combat, any spying handicaps are a pain; low g homeworld screws your industry and ground combat on normal planets. I think some of that more than makes up for taking the quicker route to technology.

I just got fed up not being able to research the the best armour and thorium crystals i spose

Maybe cheating is too stronger word, but i find that when i play the game with this pick it is so much easier. You never have to pass up on holo simulator for auto fact, etc.. You also always have tech to keep offer the AI gifts in the early/mid stages of the game. Keeping the AI sweet in the early stages of the game is essential, especially when playing on the impossible level. Malicious bloke, the AI is getting the first turn in combat because of "ship initiative". This is explained in the 1.31 patch readme file.

Play with Repulsive, then see how it goes. No trade or gifts. Actually I think a case could be made that Charismatic is a stronger trait as you get the top leaders and can trade the pants off the AI.

I would agree that Charismatic is a must at the impossible level. The AI has such accelerated production meaning you must keep the peace long enough to tech up/build improvements. I myself have never completed the game on the impossible level. I came close. I can complete it on the hard level most games.
