Me and my friends just started playing Civilizaton 4. Great game! Only one thing i need to know? How do we ally? We've tried explorers, settlers and scouts. What's wrong? Thanks for any help.

I don't play multiplayer, but do you mean like in-game alliance? Or is there a multiplayer option where players can make pre-determined teams?

If it is an in-game alliance with one of your friend's civilizations, you need Military Tradition to make defensive pacts and whatnot.

I mean in-game alliance. When I cross someones border the game says something like this:"Crossing the border will trigger war. Sign an open border treaty."

Well I guess I need Military Tradition to make this work.

Thanx

Its an option when you set up the game "Allow Permanent Alliances" or words to that effect.

Open Border Agreements become available with writing. Once you have signed an OBA, you can move freely through eachother's territory.

A Defensive Pact means if one of you is attacked, the other will declare war. That becomes available with Military Tradition.

You can also create a permanent alliance between yourself and other players (AI or human) by putting yourselves on the same team when setting up the game. Start a game by going through the "Custom Game" menu and next to each Civ, you will see a number. You can assign the same number to multiple civs thus making them members of the same team. They will share Line of Sight (LOS), technologies, and Wonder Effects for the duration of the game.
