How do I bring up the menu during a game?

I can't find an icon to access the menu while playing. I think I have pressed "ESC" and finally gotten it. Is there another way. My manual doesn't say.

Sailing with the keypad, try keypad 1 or 3

Also the function keys.

Erm.. sound silly but what are the controls while sailing, battling and to save a game?
