How do I play my maps with my specified start locations?

I tried making a map and setting down everyones starting settler and warrior, but when I try to play it through the game, all the start locations get randomised.

Also, how can I modify the city states to choose which type they are and their personalities?

In worldbuilder you can specify players and lay out initial starting cities/units/etc.

When you go to play your map be sure to load it as a scenario, not just as a map. Its the scenario part that tells it to load the player locations, etc.

I cant find where to start a scenario from inside the game :(

It also depends where your map is stored... if it's stored in the my_games/civ5/maps folder i believe as far as i could tell is go through MODS... then go advanced, select your map... go back to the basic set up and under map it will have the button Load scenario.

I made a huge map, added 18 players in the scenario editor, put random starting locations all over the world, then set the location for Player 1 Egypt in a corner of the map.

Whenever I start the game, as Egypt (and yes I'm loading scenario) I get put in a different spot. If I try to start a new game, I'll be back in that different spot, even though that starting location is set as random.

What am I doing wrong?

Just spent the last hour trying to figure this out, has anyone figured out how to link a starting position to a civ?

Did you check the box to load scenario when you were loading the map in-game? I don't think you can just pick a random civ and have it work - you have to set your race in the map and then load scenario.

I checked the box for load scenario before starting the game.

Just to test it again, I made a tiny map, added 3 players (egypt, france, and greece) in the scenario editor, then edited three different tiles to set them for each of the different players.

I started a new game as Egypt and I loaded in a random spot, not in any of the 3 starting locations that I had set.

I just tried adding Egyptian units to the map (1 settler and a bunch of anti airgun) and even those don't show up when I start the game as Egypt

I have the same problem. Created a map with starting cities for all, selected the map in advanced setup changed difficulty and other settings, clicked back, clicked "Play as scenario", saw that difficulty was changed back to chieftain :hmm:, changed it back to immortal, "Play game"... Regular settler/warrior start.

You need to go MODS -> Single Player -> Set up

If you just through single player it doesn't work properly.

When I play a map through MODS, there is no Save/Load buttons in the ingame menu, basically meaning I have to play the entire map through or lose my game progress. Is there a fix for this?

This is not working for me for some reason. I used the world builder to generate a random Huge continents map. I am using 16 AI civs, and I placed via the Edit Plot tab starting locations for all 15 as "Random Player" start locations, and then selected one for the specific civilization I want to play and designated that as Player 1 (German Empire). I load the map via the mod menu in the game and not only is Germany not placed where I designated, it's in one of the random start spots. If I restart, it always appears in the same incorrect spot. I designated that random spot to be a specific civ, and now Germany always spawns in a different spot that I designated for a random civ (again, same spot on restarts over and over). It looks like the other civs are all in designated random start spots, except for the spot that I designated for Germany... a random civ is placed two tiles to the left of it (EDIT: I designated 3 other civ start places, and on starting the game, those particular civs did NOT spawn on those spots, but rather in random places that weren't ever designated start locations).

Also, I designated 16 civs to be in the scenario. When I load the map, there are only 12 slots. I add 4 AI civs, but then the civs that I did not want in the scenario are showing up.... why? I'm guessing that for some reason the game is not recognizing it as a scenario.

What am I doing wrong? Do I need to designate start locations for all the City-states for it to work? I did not place any of those, deciding to make their placement truly random. Or is it because when I load the map I alter settings, like victory conditions, leader name, etc.? Any ideas?

Sounds like you haven't selected the "Load Senario" checkbox when selecting the map. You cannot enter Advanced Setup when you do, but it uses the defined start spots.

You're right, I figured this out last night.

So the procedure I had to use is:

-Open World builder and generate map
-Place start locations desired and save
-Close WB, open Civ V
-Choose Mod
-Choose Single Player
-Choose Setup
-Click on "Advanced Setup"
-Choose the saved map I generated
-Click on "Back"
-Select my civ and other settings.
-Check the "Load Scenario" button
-Click on "Start Scenario"

Does anyone else think that this seems like an unnecessarily complicated path to getting to a scenario? I mean, come on...

When playing a game in Mods, all player-made maps will appear in the drop-down maps list without having to go to Advanced Setup.
