How do i see what state religion an AI has?

I only have one religion icon(my state religion) next to my name. But the AIs usually have multiple religion icons, how do i tell what their state religion is? I always get penalties for "heathen religion" because more than half of the AIs always seem to band together under one religion, regardless of which religion i manage to found. If i convert them to my state religion, they usually convert to something else after a while.

For all players, in the scoreboard area, a maximum of 1 religion icon will appear, that of the state religion for that player. If no religious icon is present then there is no state religion for that players. If you are seeing multiple religious icons in that area either it is a bug OR you are not looking in the right spot and need to be more precise in you description of what you are seeing.

As for "heathen religion", that is the main point of religion in the game........

The problem here is that you're being too stiff-necked, religiously faithful, and spiritually proud.

Instead of trying to make them convert to your religion, just convert to theirs. Problem solved! Of course, it has to be present in your empire to do that, but this is seldom a problem if you're interacting much with the AI anyway. (You have OB treaties, right? Have to in order to use your missionaries.) Your founded religion doesn't disappear, you can still spread it and get your shrine income. Unless/until you go Free Religion, the key to religious diplomacy is flexibility.

Are you sure it's the religion you are seeing? If you have Open Borders with the AI, it'll have an icon there that looks like a scroll piece. If you can trade with them, there is the Recycling symbol in yellow. If you have Espionage advantages, then the little red circle with the man in the middle will appear. I've never seen the AI have more than one religious icon besides their name, so this is the only conclusion that I can think of.
