How do I upgrade units?

I'm testing my first game. I just got gunpowder, so how do I upgrade my previous units? I have plenty of axemen, longbowman, and catapults, but I don't know if any of these are upgradable.

Just click on the unit and on the menu at the bottom of the screen there will be upgrade options, also you can upgrade all units of the same type by holding alt then clicking the upgrade button. Beware though that upgrading units is expensive and upgrading all your units at once could break you, but the costs are displayed in the text box.

you cant upgrade those until riflemen or infantry, im not sure which. but its just a button you press it costs a couple hundred coins though.

When you select a unit, look at the command box at the bottom. If you see a picture of a unit, you can upgrade that unit.

To upgrade all possible units to that new unit, hold ALT before clicking. If you hold ALT, then move the cursor over the picture, you'll see how much it costs to upgrade all the units.

I've noticed that sometimes the little box you normally click to upgrade a unit isn't always there. It seems to not be there if your unit is not in your territory. For example I couldn't upgrade my scout to explorer when he wasn't in my territory.

Correct.To upgrade a unit,it must be in your territory.
But keep an eye on the experience points a unit has.
You could lose some hard earned points by upgrading.
If a units has more than 10 points it will be reduced to 10 points.
Also upgrading to the next experience level is also set back to 10 points.
Example : old unit (17/17) -> (17/26)
upgraded unit ((17/17) -> (10/26)

those XPs are still gone.
