How do I view AI unit promotions?

I've never been able to figure this out...

When you are at war with an AI, how can you see what specific promotions it has? When you mouse over it, all you see are the promotion icons, but the minute you try to hover over and read what they are, the unit interface at bottom left disappears.

It's driving me crazy, particularly because I'm fighting a bunch of Indonesian Kris Swordsmen and have no idea what their promotions are!

I don't think you can, you just have to be able to recognize the icon, which a lot of times is just a generic triangle.

Yeah, I think this is the case...still, wish there was a way to do this - many a time I've wanted to know what promotions an enemy unit had before attacking it.

Many units would have been saved where I able to see enemy unit promotions. How was I to know that unit had a 33% combat bonus against mounted units?!

IDEA:

This is where a huge SCOUT buff could come in. Maybe SCOUTS should have the ability to see what exact promotions each unit in a 3 tile radius has?

The only way I've found to do this is hover over the unit when at war and look at the combat preview panel. There it will list promotions. If you're at peace with the AI, hold the ALT key down while doing the rollover.

EDIT: You must have a unit selected to do this and the unit need not be in range for an attack.

Is the a max number of promotions that a unit can have? As an example, I ran a heavily-promoted -- the promotion bar was full at the time -- unit to Mt. Kilimanjaro = free Altitude Training for that unit. But when I viewed that unit afterward, the AT icon didn't show on the promotions bar. Does that mean that the unit's promotion quota was full, and so the AT didn't take? Or that it did take, but since there's no way to scroll the promotion list, it just doesn't show? [Lost track as to which unit was, so I can't decipher if the promo is there just by watching how that unit behaves in hilly terrain.]

Somewhat related: Is there any way for a unit to get the "Ignores terrain penalties" buff other than by being a Scout?

The promotion GUI is simply poorly done. There is no limit on promotions, they just end up stretching off the screen and behind other graphics after the first 6 or so.

Yeah, this could be easily overlooked if the higher tier promotions replace the lower tier, so if you have cover 2, you only see the higher icon and if you hover you see +66% defense vs ranged attacks.

I don't know why they didn't do such a thing after all every higher tier promotion have a different icon...

Declare war on the ai faction then click your unit and have it mouse over the enemy unit and look at the icons. You have to memorize the icons so that you'll know what the enemy unit has, if you're at peace, you can't check it's promos.
