I've been playing civ3 now for about 2 weeks - yes, i'm a newbie, i have still haven't figured out exactly how to build armies. I got a great leader the very first game i played (a fluke) and haven't gotten one since. I also can't fugure out how to build the military academy.

On an unrelated note, how do you get the ending date to stop being 2150 if you want it to?

Thanks in advance for any help.

To build an army with a great leader, you must:
- have atleast 4 towns/cities/metropolis's
- move the leader to your city
- two buttons appear in the bottom of your screen: one with unifinished brickwall, one with 5 'i'-letters
- the brickwall-button is for hurrying the production in that city (I would advise to use this only on great/small wonders or very expensive buildings - like the palace)
- the five 'i' letters is for building an army.

you can then add units to this army (it's like a transport) by pressing the L-key, when the unit you want to add to the army is active, and the unit is in the same tile as the army.

I hope this helped a bit.

how do you build an army without a great leader - that's what military academy is for right? I can't get it to pop up as an option to build after i get military traditions.

Hmm, Where's zulu when you need him? :)

It is strongly recommended that you use your first GL (Great Leader) to build an army. If you don't there is no telling when you will get another chance, and then you can't build the Heroic Epic (which increases the chances of getting another leader) or the Military Academy (which, as you know, allows you to build armies without GLs).

Hmmmm, I just decide on what I'm going to use the leader for when I get him, or if he's in the middle of enemy territory I make an army out of him.

Here's a good thread about whether or not you should in fact use your first leader to build an army (and many other useful things):

Scroll down to the heading titled "Heroic Epic".
You should probably also browse/read the rest of the material, as it's very helpful.
