so i've just started my first huge map game () but i've now managed to get to modern era and i've suddenly realised that I can't kill everyone in the time and the bloomin aztecs have a higher score than me, I'll probly be able to get the space shuttle though. My question is though, how do you guys tend to finish large map games?

By not playing them.... Seriously, you finish the game by whatever method you are able to and still win.

What difficulty level are you on?

Size of the map does not have to be an issue. I have won by conquest on maps up 362x362 with up 31 nations. You can finish anyway you want, once you make it to the modern age. If you want to win by domination, you have to keep taking down towns to gain more land.

The type of map has a great impact though. To conquest on an island map takes more time as you have to invade each island. Continents are bit easier than island in that you only need one invasion in most cases.

Pangea tends to make it easiest as you to not need to build up a fleet and send over forces. Post a save, if wants someone to give a better idea of what can be done from the point you are on right now.

I almost never give in to the arbitrary time limits set by the game. I just can't resist that 'just one more turn' question until I'm satisfied with the goal(s) I have set.

same here dude

just in case you want an update, i've nuked someone got everyone to go to war with me, won by space race (which always feels like cheating), and i'll probly finish once i own all types of luxury

because thats what i want before i finish, normally i'd kill everyone but i'd like to finish this game this month

In my current game (large, monarch) I have a techlead of over 10 techs. I already wacked 3 civs, including the number 3 in the list. While my attackforce consists of bombers, art, Mech inf and ofc a lot of (modern) armor armies i find the conquering going very slow.

Not to mention that i need to island hop to kick the number two in the game who is about half my size, but has infantry to defend itself with.

So a conquestvictory is gonna be long an tedious, so i'm opting for a space race victory. I even build the internet to boost my research through the roof :)

So conquest if i get the chance, space race for when the going gets too tough :)

So it sounds like the optional winning conditions are a cop out for the only real win, but only if you consider this a wargame, which it doesn't necessarily have to be!

I don't feel I have to wipe out the AI Civs, just break their back so they are no longer a threat. Although I have taken games, with huge maps, all the way till they are all my terrain.

In my current game: (balancer scenario), i have 24 civs, and i wiped out 10 already and its still mideivel, and there is still a few weak civs left to eliminate. im probably gonna finish just by killing everyone, or if time runs out, i have a 200 point lead in score, so ill just take win by score.

@lord katana: i would go for conquering the number 2 civ!

I don't seem to have a choice right now... I build my entire spaceship, pressed launch and the game froze (like "unexectional error, terminating application") TWICE!...

So i build the UN.......... (portugal, the number two civ just killed of the last remaining civ, so it was just the two of us) and that didnt work either  Seems you only have one vote each  not based on number of pop or something... (yes was first time for me that i even considered building the UN).

So either i ride it out to a cultural victory (30 more years to go) or i kick Henry's buttocks.... And 30 years button clicking (which basically will only be cleaning up an average of 5 pollutions a turn and giving new orders) just couldn't keep me interested last night...

This emperor game on a huge pangea I finished off with a war-time mobilized golden age. When it was all over and 9 civs were wiped out, the Americans held dominion over the 1-tile island of Los Angeles.

I have never won by space race, by the time I finish the ship, somebody has already won, and I am somehow not able to launch it...

I prefer to win by launching the space ship. I play on huge island maps, with a bunch of my own mods, and conquering all that other territory is normally too tedious to do.
