this is probably the most stupiedest question i've ever asked since im pretty much well sussed up on most other things. things is i keep hearing people mention this and i know you need civil service but how do u implement the irrigation of farms

build the farms adjacent to each other. That passes on the irrigation.

As the response below yours points out, you need to have Civil Service to create the chain of farms.

Also, to maintain the fresh water, you have to maintain the chain. You cannot irrigate to the desired squares then cut that chain with a cottage later on, you'll lose the benefits. This is true until you get..ummm...can't remember the name of the tech...the tech that allows you to irrigate non-fresh water squares.

To sum it up...

Pre-Civil Service: you can only irrigate tiles adjacent to fresh water.
Post-Civil Service: you can create chains of irrigated tiles.
Post-Tech XYZ: you can irrigate any square.

edit: typo

The tech you're looking for is Biology.

You're not irrigating non-fresh water squares with Biology, you're only allowed to build Farms where ever you like. However, having irrigation will still increase the food output by 1 so you need to maintain those chains you mention in order to get the most out of them.

One more important detail: once you've got Civil Service, your city's center tile will spread irrigation, assuming it is on irrigatable land. Hills definitely aren't; plains and grassland are. I don't know if irrigation will spread through a city on (flat) ice, desert, or tundra or not.

I think all terrain will pass water through a city. Desert, ice and hills next to a river or lake say fresh water when pointed at with the cursor. You can actually farm tundra if you want also.
