I've always been curious to find out how others get the ball rolling when they start a new game.

I personally open with warrior, warrior, settler, worker, archer.

Why? I typically play with raging barbs, and I like to beef up my security before expanding and improving. At the same time, I b-line to archery on the tech tree.

Classic worker chopping settler, then it depends: If I already pushed the fog of war and am not afraid of barbs I go for antoher settler.

For me, it depends upon the situation I find myself in at the beginning. If I'm hoping to found an early religion, it makes little sense to build a worker right away. On the other hand, if I'm in a starting location with resources I can work right away, I'll put that worker in the beginning of the queue. When in doubt, I'll build a scout (or warrior if I don't have hunting.)

There's just too many variables to have a set opening strategy.

worker worker warrior settler pending on starting civ. The extra worker and land developed is essential at start.

Go for bw then warrior, worker, worker (chop), settler (chop), worker (chop), Axemen.

Worker, chop, worker, chop, connect food resource, warrior, warrior, double chop, settler. A worker is sent along with every settler to chop out a new worker, first thing.

Try to get copper in second or third city, because axemen are the best defenders against barbarians (they should never loose a battle). Go for pottery early and spam cottages to keep up in technology. If there is enough room to expand, do it. Otherwise, build barracks and start massing axes or horse archers.

Usually 1 of 2 things.

For chopping I normally build worker worker settler.

If I've got mysticism I'll normally build Barracks, warrior (repeat till religion is founded) then settler, worker, worker.

It goes like this most of the time:

warrior, worker(build farm), settler, archer. First warrior kills random animals and barbs and find experience in huts, Until it gets 2 moves in forrests. Then it gets back to make a flexible defense against barbs (not axemen barbs).

First archer defend capitol. And then stuff gets random.

I never use scouts as per they never seem to last very long with the barbs.

For me, it depends. I don't have a fixed strategy for each game, I wait and see what I have to work with first, then formulate my eary, (opening), moves from there.

But, I do try to get a couple warriors out, searching for those wonderful goody huts, (and getting some easy exp from animals, and barbs). I'll generally try to get a worker sooner, rather than later, chop a settler soon thereafter.....and after that it depends entirely on what I have to work with, and what victory strategy I decide to pursue.

Usually I go warrior (unless isolated on island)

Followed by scout, then settler, then worker, worker, settler, and keep pumping out settlers, then build the pyramids ASAP.

But I never build a worker first.

Help me out, I don't understand what you all mean by "worker chop worker", etc... Do you mean harvesting lumber to accelerate production? If so, I didn't think this was possible until you have the right advancements, some time into the game.

Yes; for forests you need bronze working; for jungles you need iron working

EDIT: I forgot to mention jungles don't give hammers.

I almost always do:

Build warrior while exploring and growing city to size 2, start researching a prereq for pottery or polytheism.

When I hit 2, immediately switch to worker - bronze working

Finish both, worker chops a settler, then chop another worker (warrior if barbarians are starting to appear). When the 2nd worker is finished, start improving the capital.

No. You need to have mining before you research bronze working.

I often reseach first the wheel (if not a start techonology) then go for mining-pottery-bronze working.
My production row: Scout (if no hunting, warrior), Scout (if no hunting, warrior) worker, warrior, settler. I never chop workers or settlers, i save forests for wonders, and some i leave untouched, because of lumbermill-railroad combination later. When i use this row, my city is often size of 4 or above before building a settler, so it takes only sometime to build it. Then later, when i have three+ cities, my capital becomes a wonder factory.
