With me it depends on what has happened the turn before. Primarily my bombers are there to destroy the TOW Infantry in my enemies' cities so that my modern armour can roll straight over them with little or no causualties.
However the other day in one of my games I had been in a long war with Americans and had pretty much smashed their armies to bits and was busily taking around 6 or 7 cities a turn (Huge map). And was using large amounts of artillery, bombers and armour to accomplish this. Anyway out of the blue their neighbours the Romans suddenley declared war on me! The Romans sent a stack of 30 veteran TOW Infantry into my newly acquired American territory. This seemed to spur on the Americans who sent a dozen of there TOW Infantry too. Luckily though I had 80x stealth bombers within range and a stack of 30 artillery on rails. Needless to say by the end of the turn I had squashed all their troops using just 3x armour  :ar15:

Air Superiority is one of the most important things in the game...

I usually have around 40 bombers, mostly because I control the skies early on. I use the flatten everything approach, I target enemy air power first, then resources, then luxuries and then use them to assist my naval forces in preparation for invasion. During Invasion I use them as artillery, until my arties can do it themselves.

If its a tough war, your civ needs to embrace total war to win it! Unrestricted bombing is part of that!

Yeah, but if you get rid of the luxes first, the strategic resources won't matter much. Won't do them any good if their in Civil Disorder.

But probably better to get rid of the SR first, since they could have other sources of happiness.

Me, when targeting resources, I go for the closest ones.

the best (most effective) unit in the game... the bomber.

i use the flatten-everything approach. in my vocabulary it means the total destruction of their aircraft, their aluminium and oil support, their cities, their units. the only thing i do not bomb is an empty square. city-bombing takes a lot of time and you need at least 50 bombers to do that effectively, but then no one stops you from conquering the enemy's lifeless cities with the most obsolete units.. its funny :)
