How does production work?

Hey guys!

I was playing around a little bit today and I realized there is something that I´ve always wondered about but never really figured out.

Factory
MFG.Plant
Hydro Plant
Nuclear Plant

How the heck does these work?

Factory: Increases Production by 50%. Upkeep 4.
MFG. Plant: Increases Production by 100%. Upkeep 6.
Hydro Plant: Increases Factory Production by 50%. Upkeep 4.
Nuclear Plant: Increases Factory Production by 50%. Upkeep 2.

Notice the difference from "Increases Production" and "Increases Factory Production".

Ex.1
In a city I build MFG.Plant. I get 100% boost to the production, but the option to build Factory disappears. If the city is located correctly I can still continue to build Hydro or choose to go with Nuclear Plant. But does this give a boost? Since I DON´T have a factory and it specifically says "Increases Factory Production" for both of them.

Ex.2
I build Factory to boost 50% Production. Then Hydro OR Nuclear Plant to boost it another 50%. And that´s it. Same result as MFG.Plant but more upkeep cost due to 2 buildings instead of 1. (Or is this Hydro/Nuclear boost only 50% OF the 50% Factory Production? So actually 25% of original Production?)

Ex.3
I build Factory to boost 50% Production. Then MFG.Plant to boost another 100%. Choose between Hydro/Nuclear Plant and receive a total of 200%. (Or 100% from MFG (of original production), 50% Factory (of original production), 50% Hydro/Nuclear (of Factory production = 25% of original production), so a total of 175%).

Basically I have 4 buildings to choose from and I want to maximize production. Which ones do I choose?

And after these questions are answered naturally the next one comes, how does the WoW Hoover Dam affect this?

Once you have built the Mfg. Plant, you can sell your Factory.

Industry Bonus with Factory: +50%
Industry Bonus with Mfg. Plant: +100%
Industry Bonus with Factory and Mfg. Plant: +100%

As you can see, there's no need to keep your factory once the Mfg. Plant is up and running.

Also, a city can only benefit from ONE of the following buildings at a time: Power Plant, Hydro Plant, Nuclear Plant, Hoover Dam. Having more than one of them in a city (resp. on the continent if it's the Hoover Dam) does not increase the industry output any further.

So if you want to maximize your output without keeping unnecessary buildings, you should have one of the follofing combinations:
Mfg. Plant + Power Plant
Mfg. Plant + Hydro Plant
Mfg. Plant + Nuclear Plant
Mfg. Plant + Hoover Dam (on same continent)

The Power Plant is available early on, but does not have a pollution-reducing effect.
The Hydro Plant reduces pollution, but is expensive to build and maintain. Also, it can only be built in cities adjacent to mountain or river squares.
The Nuclear Plant reduces pollution (same as Hydro Plant) and is relatively cheap to run, but in the case of Civil Disorder it may blow up (same effect as a nuclear weapon).
The Hoover Dam counts as a Hydro Plant in all cities of the respective civilization on the same continent as the city where it is located, and it has no maintenance cost. But since it's a WoW, only one civ can get it.

Ahh thank you, this clarifies a lot for me.
Personally I tend to never build the Power Plant, the pollution is just horrendous at this point and Nuclear... well I like it, I´m just scared of that melt down so I tend to wait until I have the Nuclear Fusion advance (or what it´s called, the one that takes away the risk of melt down).

One thing though, does Hoover Dam actually increase the production of a city that has nothing? No factory, MFG or the other plants? It seems that it needs some kind of boosting building first to kick in.
Is this correct or am I dreaming up stuff again?

All buildings that "increase Factory production" (Power Plant, Nuclear Plant, Hydro Plant, Hoover Dam) need a Factory or Mfg. Plant in order for their effect to kick in.

Also, they only increase the number of shields generated by the Factory or Mfg. Plant by 50%.

Example:
Base Industry Output (without any buildings): 11 shields
With Mfg. Plant: 11 + 11 = 22 shields
With Mfg. Plant and Hydro Plant: 11 + 11 + 5 = 27 shields ("half shields" are always rounded down)

All buildings that "increase Factory production" (Power Plant, Nuclear Plant, Hydro Plant, Hoover Dam) need a Factory or Mfg. Plant in order for their effect to kick in.
To clarify, this includes the pollution reducing effects, so, almost paradoxically, you won't see this, either, without a Factory or Mfg. Plant.
