How does someone become a mod?

Out of pure curiosity I would like to know how one may become a Moderater. While I'm at it I would also like to know the exact hierarchy of the site.

ThunderFall is the Man here. He decides who becomes mod. His reasons are His own. Do not question He Who makes the rules. As for a Hierarchy, ThunderFall is the Man here. All other mods come below him. There are ArchMods who carry out His Veangeance (and it is fiery). There are Seraphim Mods which sing His praises. There are lesser mods like XIII. :sheep:

:p

"How to become a Mod" has been discussed quite often here. ;)

Rather than try to dig up old links, let me just say that you have to show your "usefulness" to the site over some period of time. That means following the site rules, being helpful, etc.

Another factor is that you have to be "acceptable" to the other mods you will be working with.

Of course, the final key is to not *want* the job. Anyone who wants to be a moderator is automatically disqualified as being too power-hungry. :p

In any case, Thunderfall makes the decision.

As for the mod "Hierarchy", just look at the Forum Leaders page. TF is the Administrator, the boss. Lefty is the Super-Mod. The rest of us just gaggle along together. :D

The Hiearchy is simple: Thunderfall and everyone one else. No moderator has direct authority over another, only such respect and influence and he/she has earned. "Super moderator" is jusidictional, not a grade or rank.

If you want to see an interesting staff hierarchy, check out CDG's staff structure. They have many ranks of mods and admins. (please note that I don't mean to advertise CDG, just show a site that has an interesting hierarchy)

Here it's just:
The Supreme God (Thunderfall)
rules
The Lesser Gods (the mods)
rules
The Foolish Mortals (that's us ;))

No, silly mortal, they would be Landlords, like me.

I can't provide beer (underage) but I would we willing to provide root beer if anybody in the staff room wants it ;)

When a moderator leaves or Thunderfall decides this site needs a new mod, he then flips a coin. Heads is a value of one, tails a value of two. Then he takes the number of mods and adds it to the number of ex-mods quartered, then divides the number of posters by the number of mods + .25ex mods, times 1 if heads, 2 if tails. He then gets a random number generator, and also his spam detector. If they give a total number value more than the previous total, no mod is needed; if less than the previous total, he proceeds to do a celebratory dance during a ceremony two days later, featuring all his family and friends. After this ritual he starts thinking about who to make a mod. To determine who is the best, he looks out the window and notes what he first sees. He takes the first letter of that word, and the name of the user he chooses must start with that letter. He, for example, decided on Padma when he first saw a pigeon. (Later on, Thunderfall one day noticed the pigeon getting into his fridge, restocking it with beer, but that's another story.) Anyway, out of all the users begining with that letter, he takes the ten with the highest postcounts, then counts the total number of letters in all of their names. He takes this number and compares it to the number of current mods. If it's less than the number, he "fidges" the person with the highest postcount; if more, the person with the least. The person who is "fidged" gets 2 chips. Then he gives one chip to all the others. He then asks every candidate to say why he should be mod. He then judges each person's case, giving them 0-5 chips depending on it's goodness. He then goes with the person with the most chips. In the case of a tie, an auction takes place.

That is how it is done. :mischief: What Padma said is just a silly cover-up.

In addition, pls also remember that mods for each section require somewhat different skill-sets and pre-knowledge.

Posters who are deemed responsible and matured, have a long history of sensible and 'trouble-free' not-too-spammy posting, maintain good friendly relations with other posters, are dedicated to CFC, log in frequently and help others frequently will also be more highly considered. ;)

Posters who report on troubled posts frequently will be deemed as helping the site to run smoothly. Posters who report frivolous stuff though... :hammer:

And of course, if you are likeable (to the mods, or better yet TF himself) and have friends in high places (like the mods, or better yet TF himself), the chances are even better. :p

Hmm. . .only done this the once. That was a blantant copyright infringment. And he wouldn't shut up about it.

I guess my thoughts are that if somehting bothers me, well, opinions vary, and they are welcome to their opinions. That, and I don't want to be a snitch.

I guess that means I won't be a mod. Oh, darn! :nya:

It's not a matter of snitching - it's analogous to seeing a crime being committed (or what you think is a crime), and then making a 911 call to get the police in on the act. ;)

Whatever that helps in our work is welcomed. :)

I guess you have to be older to remember the (British) Mods and Rockers. Mods wore fancy clothing and rode motorscooters. Rockers word ducktail hiarcuts with lots of grease. Its been a while, I may have some ot the details wrong. Both were violent, Rockers perhaps a little more than the Mods.

If that is indeed the case, then i shall never be a mod...

-pauses-, then laughs hatilly at the though tof him being a mod, who apperntlly never, ever, ever post there opinions on most things... somthing I would never give up

though, as I have learned -the hard way- all posts need a real point, and this will be no exception- why do mods like never post on anything (the exception being XIII in the history forums, and i *think*(not sure though) an occasional post by padma- do mods give up the right for average posting? if so, i can now see all to clearlly why you say it is not all it appears to be...
