How good is this game?

So from that standpoint it is fun as an occasional diversion.

A good way to put that. :)

 Nes = original??????????
That's why I said original (NES version).

I first played Pirates! on my old 386 system. Bought them game at Best Buy for $5.

I play the NES version (note the word "version"), which is basically identical. But lugging around a computer that weighs like 30 pounds simply for one outdated game seems silly.

So ... I have fun playing the old Pirates! (Never even tried "Pirates! Gold"), so is this new Pirates! fun?

If you like the old Pirates! game then you should be right at home with this one...the core gameplay is unchanged, and the graphics are very pretty. :)

The downside of the game is, as others have said, that it gets very repetetive after a while. Its still fun to go back to now and then though.

Original = Nes is very funny indeed.
Always thought that Nes came out long after the C46.

Yave you ever tried the C64 version of Pirates?

This is the most repetetive game I've played since I owned a 486. The swordfights and dances are virtually identical, and you must complete many of them to progress. There are many more repetetive aspects of this game that are too boring to mention here. I can't believe that anyone over 8 years old would rate this game 92% (as Gamespot does). I swapped my copy to a sucker on Craigslist for his FarCry. If you are the sucker reading this, I guarantee you are no longer playing SMP.

Very good game to play when you are in your early teens, gets tedious after a while i.e. sailing from one end of Caribbean takes a while especially going east!

Has good nostalgia value!

It was SO addicting at first, but got less great after a while. Still an excellent game, worth the money.

I still think the Sega Genesis version is better than this one...

it is true the game is repetitive but when i feel like i wanna be a pirate i jump on my mighty sloop and sail to the caribbean with this pretty little game.
game play mechanics are maybe too simple but the point isn't there!

i was a kid when i first played pirates! in 1980's
now i play great games like civ4, farcry, act of war, bfme etc...
but i still need to dream of a pirate life!

buy it!

More or less so than the original Pirates? I still play the original (NES version) and get a huge kick out of it.

No, it actually has more variety than the original. Basically they just reproduced the same ending as the original without thinking about how to improve it. The early part of the game though has a number of new elements thrown into it. It would be nice to see a patch or expansion that rebuilds the end game to make it more interesting.

why don't you create a new thread or even a sub forum for talking about the old versions of pirates since he was thinking about getting the game over a year ago.
