How Good Is This Start Location

I agree with what Thedrin was saying. You don't want Wall Street here. You should put that in a religious/money city with a shrine(s). Since you're the Romans, you should probably not have any trouble capturing somebody's shrine city with your praetorians. Put Wall Street there, and maybe National Epic.

In this city, you'll want Oxford, and maybe National Epic. You should also consider saving Ironworks for this. You'll be able to churn out wonders, easily build any improvements you need, and maybe even shfit the hammers to science from time to time.

I don't think that this would be a very good National Epic city; there isn't enough food. It could be a candidate for the Oxford University, but with representation, your oxford usually goes very nicely in your great person farm. Who knows... depends on what other cities are nearby. I'm really looking forward to trying this. I've never been Rome before.

You'll be unhealthy in no time from the floodplains

Unhealthiness from floodplains is never a bad thing. You lose 0.4 food in the situation where you are past the health cap for an extra 1 food (vs. say grassland). For example, would you rather have 3 floodplains and the -2 food or 3 grassland? I regularly have heavy floodplains cities at -8 or worse health and growing like a weed.

right, but you're compelled to work the flood plains.

No big deal, for sure, but if you have early unheathiness (size 1 or 2), it's a pain.

On monarch (which I do not play but understand... in theory) it's a good start, pretty explosive. On Noble or Prince (as a n00b, I tend to play noble) it's fantastic with the higher health bonus.

Just after i had explored the island/continent that this start is on, the 4 barbarian archers and three barbarian axemen showed up.

What setting did you pick? Farmers gambit definitely didnt work this time.

I've looked at this start and am trying to calculate if it can work all the gold or not. It seems as though getting 3 out of the 4 gold is easy by farming the wheat and two floodplains, but the last gold mine will take extra health/happy resources and farms to tap.

Basically, the city will kick research into overdrive in the ancient/classical era and provide decent production. Once trade starts up it will get better again with the last gold and a farm on the other floodplain. However, due to the large amount of plains, it may not be capable of become a true long-term powerhouse.

Anyone want to analyze my analysis? :scan: :)

That's a great start all right. It's as good as any I've ever had. But if 10 is perfection then I think I'd give this a 9. Four gold in your starting city is overkill, really. The site would be even better if one of the gold was replaced with corn or rice, for instance. Or a strategic metal, which I'm guessing is not to be found within this city's boundaries.

Not quite true, because you might not be able to work the floodplains, but you still get unhealthiness from them. This can happen if you haven't culturally expanded yet (relevant when you first found a city with lots of floodplains around it), or the floodplains is being worked by one of your other cities, or if some of the tiles within your fat cross are controlled by an opponent.

You'll be unhealthy in no time from the floodplains, and happiness will require some attention, since you only have 1 happy resource right now.

This is not even close to right. You have +2 health from fresh water, +2 health from forests, +1 health from wheat, -1 health from floodplains. You have plenty of health for all of the citizens you can keep happy. And your next city will almost surely provide at least one more health resource.

So any news on the other strategic resources that can pop up in the BFC? If there are horses/copper/iron in there then it is a pretty sweet starting spot.

I don't think anyone has yet mentioned the effects of bureacracy in this city.

right.
Meaning that you are unable to work all 4 gold mines.
Isn't it what i said?

No, it isn't. You said the city would "be unhealthy in no time". Which it won't.

yes i did :mischief: :

At size 4 (which will be your limit for a while), you'll only be able to work 2 gold mines.
You'll need to be size 7 or 8 to work all 4 mines, which will require to find sources of happiness and health.

happy now?
